  • Beckley - 14 years ago

Funny the non-PHP devs are calling PHP devs "designers". That is seriously weak. As Lance Armstrong said, "It's not about the bike." The language is the bike.

ColdFusion 99% of the time, PHP is someone wants a Wordpress site and I need to customise something, or if they are hosting on a box without CF on it (I usually insist on managing the hosting for my clients). I can just get things done quicker in CF than anything else.

ColdFusion, never seen better programming language - I was a PHP guy some years ago but too many lines of codes for me ;-)

My server-side language of choice remains English (US), but sadly, my server just throws it's hands up and refuses to speak anything but *geek*.

So ... what choice have I? I must learn geek. Mind you, there are purportedly side benefits (something about the geek inheriting the Earth). But I digress.

The geek I've managed to master at a very rudimentary level happens to be what most everyone else out there uses - PHP (which I still think should be called HPP, instead of PHP, but that's a different story).

  • Eric - 14 years ago

I like PHP but it is indeed a little sloppy. With an MVC framework like CakePHP, PHP becomes organized enough to roll out complex apps from scratch.

  • João Pedro Pereira - 14 years ago

I'm using PHP for all of my clients, sometimes I do something in ASP or Perl, but it's very rare.

  • Ricardo Verhaeg - 14 years ago

I use PHP but I'd like to learn some Ruby and Python web dev. PHP is 'ok' not the best choice but the one that's more available for now. Not so many hosts support other languages or they have expensives plans for those languages.

And the reason PHP is on top is because it's more known in the web. not so many designers/developers know other languages then Ruby / PHP / Java (I've made a poll at college and most people told that... ) They know the language but don't know that it's also available for web-development

  • Bruno Rocha - 14 years ago

I was using asp.net and PHP, but since I discovered Python / Django / Web2Py / Pylons abd everything in the Python Ecosphere, also I found Python for Android, Python for Wii and much more..

I am more RAD with Python.

I fall in love with Python.

    Thats my choice

  • Brad - 14 years ago

Did someone really say Classic ASP? There's a reason the word "Classic" is there...

  • Mark Spidle - 14 years ago

PHP FTW. Mostly because all of the CMS's I use are written in PHP.

  • apnerve - 14 years ago

@jszilla Do you mean to say the folks at flickr, yahoo, facebook and digg are all designers??

  • Will - 14 years ago

For the most part, I develop for Linux, in which case I choose PHP (mostly because it integrates well with the large number of existing PHP applications). In the rare occasions when I get a chance to develop for a Windows server, it's ASP.NET and C# all the way.

  • Derek Buttineau - 14 years ago

Surprised there's not more Ruby if the deciding factor is learning curve and ease of use. Ruby is a much more elegant language than PHP and learning curve is quite simple, especially if you go the Rails route for website development.

That said though, they're all great languages.

  • Aramando - 14 years ago

Tough call between PHP and ASP.NET, but I've gone for ASP.NET, although my vote is actually for ASP.NET MVC coded in C# - any other configuration would be way below PHP.

  • Mike - 14 years ago

So what is the server-side language of choice for most developers if it's not PHP?

  • Bruno Wiltemburg - 14 years ago

PHP because of the learning curve, and you can do the best with less complexity ;)

  • Mark Voss - 14 years ago

    No Classic ASP?

There's quite a few developers still using this!

  • Daniel Knell - 14 years ago

A good developer should not really have a single language of choice, different languages and the tools built upon them excel in different areas, right tool for the job and all that jazz.

    Everyone has a favourite though.

  • Benoit - 14 years ago

@jszilla: I do not agree. If indeed, PHP is by far the ugliest and inconsistent language from the list, it is also the one with the largest support on the web.
A lot of small/medium sized companies do not need/want to pay or think of the problems related to more mature technologies (hosting, development costs, maintenance, support, licence costs etc.).

Also, you need to consider that PHP has grown a bit since its beginning: Yahoo is using it. Facebook is written in PHP and so is Wordpress.

My personnal choice would go for python or ruby but in the real world, I will still in most of cases stick to PHP.

  • Pedro Lopes - 14 years ago

    Wow... PHP on top...

PHP is great for home made apps and stuff (I use it for personal projects) but at work, with more complex requirements I use Java and Stripes.. Easy and powerful!

  • Pedro Bachiega - 14 years ago

It depends for what... this is a relative question.

  • mihir - 14 years ago

    prefer php

  • Carson Shold - 14 years ago

jszilla is right. Most people saying PHP are probably designers, but if they're using PHP they are likely doing at least a little bit of programming. As Thomas mentioned, it's the most widely supported language so why not use it?
For the vast majority of websites, PHP is more than capable enough to handle what needs to be done. If you're making a banking application you'd likely choose something else, but if you want to develop a blog or a site based on a custom CMS, PHP is the way to go.

  • Ralph Holzmann - 14 years ago

    PHP all the way.

Sure, it has its flaws (most noticeably in my opinion, lack of naming conventions for built in functions e.g. phpinfo() => nl2br() => array_push(), where's the standardization?).

That being said, coupled with any of the great PHP MVC frameworks out there, there's really nothing that you can't do with PHP. Easy to pickup, dynamic language.

  • jszilla - 14 years ago

Since the majority of the respondents are choosing PHP, I can only assume that they're designers and not developers. That's not meant as a burn, just that people with more less-advanced programming knowledge tend to choose php because it's got an easy learning curve.

  • Eric - 14 years ago

    PHP ftw!

  • Thomas - 14 years ago

I'm using only PHP. It's the easiest to learn and the most widely supported in my opinion.
