Make it easier on Sue, she deserves a treat at this stage! The special edition is indeed 'Special' and this story is the only tweaked edition that really made an improvement on the original, even the 90's video edition was extended. Can anyone tell me why Jean and Phylis havent made a killing on the convention circuit in the last few years, and where are they now?

I would still go for the special, but I agree with the commentators saying it should ultimately be her decision.

Special Edition is superior, but the original isn't chopped liver either and I guess it does fit in with the experiment more. So, grudgingly, I'd have to vote for that.
I'm sincerely hoping Fenric will be something she wants to see again at some point.

Let her pick, you have shown episodes with tweaked (modern) effects (CGI Dalek saucer in Dalek Invasion of Earth) IIRC & because I haven't seen it my vote is SE.

"...the Doctor will still randomly wander about to various locations for no apparent reason..."
Isn't that pretty much the whole premise of Doctor Who?

Which version of The Five Doctors did you watch?
Which version of Resurrection of the Daleks did you watch?
Having watched the Special Fenric only the other week, it doesn't really explain anything more than the original (apart from the relationship between Millington and Judson) so you might as well watch the original. Whichever version you pick, the Doctor will still randomly wander about to various locations for no apparent reason...

Go with the SE. Broadcast version is a little shorter, which Sue may appreciate, but it'll feel a lot longer.
Tom Arnold - 11 years ago
personally i consider the special edition to be more of a directors cut, which in most cases is better. As Sue is likely going to see the mighty Curse of Fenric only once, i think the special edition makes the most of the story so go for this one. i know its not the "pure" broadcast version, but we want her to enjoy it more dont we?
Tom - 11 years ago
On the one hand, the broadcast version is the original. And it's pretty awesome as it is.
But then again - Sue will probably only watch it once, and it would be nicer watching a version that you can understand! :p
OK, I've got to stop now... but one more thing: I just relayed all this to MY wife (not currently in space), and she said what NOBODY (to my knowledge) has suggested thus far, but should have been super-obvious from the start: just let her pick.
Damon - 11 years ago
No worries. I'm much calmer than I come across in writing. :-) I find it telling that people are proposing that, although v2 is *better* (in their opinion), you should present your wife the substandard one. She's your wife and you should give her the best, otherwise it's a bit disrespectful. Granted, not have-an-affair disrespectful, more like leave-the-seat-up disrespectful. :-)

Nothing mystical gets conferred on an episode just because it's broadcast. Just go with the best version (and preferably the one the production team themselves are happiest with). My vote has to go with the Special Edition for that reason. It'll be fascinating to see how the votes stack up though. It really does seem to be much more even balanced than I'd have thought. Seems to really polarise people.
Blimey, calm down. I know there isn't anything "pure" about it, that's why I'm fielding the question.
Damon - 11 years ago
Also, to those of you saying, she can watch the SE next time? She's been doing this for (I think) nearly two years straight! Do you really think there's going to be a "next time"?!? Unless she gives the broadcast version a 9+, fat chance.
Damon - 11 years ago
If it's closer than, say, 2:1, I say just watch whatever version you prefer. As I mentioned on FB, it was never really an "experiment" to begin with. It's just f'ing entertainment! There was never anything "pure" about it. Just do whatever the F you want.

Stick to the broadcast version. The SE is better, but the whole experiment, surely, is to watch as 'originally' as possible, as it went out. I know I, personally, want Sue's thoughts on what went out, not what the team would've liked to air.
Alan - 11 years ago
Be consistent. She didn't watch the four part version of Planet of Giants, she should watch the original Fenric. I'll happily admit that the SE is better, but she can watch that next time she watches Fenric.

No Five Doctors SE, No Fenric SE.
Special IS better but the experiment should use the broadcast. Then we can have a special edition special!
Special is much better
