Cocos Lovers are really cool. Also This is the Kit are good.

  • Catriona MacKenzie - 11 years ago

Cocos Lovers as they are brilliant! I have seen them live twice and have three of their albums, which gets
played in our house all the time. They also bribed me to write a comment - which I accept, whole-heartedly ;D
PS I apologise for Derek Degelfoe - my boyfriend's messed up! Haha

Lisa Knapp - she really knows a lot about folk and its history but can re-interpret old songs in beautiful, new ways that keep it alive and vibrant. She's fantastic live and her voice is exquisite. I like a couple of the other acts on this list but Lisa definitely fits the alternative side of folk music description - less predictable than the rest and just more interesting

Cocos are a great contemporary folk band which define them self from amongst the others by having deep powerful harmonies and eclectic use of many instruments which all have there time to play a key role in a song. The band has a veteran like tight sound, which encompasses a afro rhythm and many other world influences. They play with passion and always seem to create a crescendo to the atmosphere. They are great at festivals and would not look out of place on the pyramid stage and certainly deserve to be on radio.

  • CD - 11 years ago

All entrants have their merits but This is the Kit create songs that instantly etch themselves in memory. They are simultaneously original & familiar.

  • Bel - 11 years ago

She'e out on her own.. Outstanding Intelligent Haunting Folk

  • Lucy Davies - 11 years ago

I love This is the Kit.Kate stables has the most beautiful voice, the musical arrangements and songs are uplifting, and magical but never whimsical and often with a sense of beautiful melancholy. I'm always humming and singing them after listening to them and i don't know why they aren't more well known. Just lush and i hope they get more airplay :-)

There are two very good reasons Lisa Knapp's an award winner: Quality and Innovation.
Lisa's music (including, of course, her voice) is full of drama, power and passion. She takes tradition-based music in directions no-one else can get a bearing on, then delivers as finely tuned a package of songs and music to her audience as anyone could wish for.

Cocos Lovers are fun, exciting, and you can't help but dance to them. Their inspiration seems to come from many places in the world, and takes you along for the ride.

  • Sophie - 11 years ago

Incredible live, incredible musicians - Cocos are constantly evolving and making new discoveries and are one of the most exciting bands around.

  • Jason - 11 years ago

Voted for This Is The Kit, although have a soft spot for the first Cocos Lovers EP, TITK albums win hands down. Most people won't have heard their first two releases, you are missing out.

  • David Brown - 11 years ago

This Is The Kit. Kate's lyrics and melodies are always so playful and surprising, while using just simple traditional instrumentation – a true original.

  • Gary - 11 years ago

Cocos Lovers are a band who put everything into their music, whether its busking in city centres or playing stages at the likes of Glastonbury and Green Man, the performance is always special. They create a sound which can break a heart one minute to making you dance like a loon the next. Lands and continents are crossed as strains of the Deep South, The Plains of Africa and Celtic shores meld with catchy guitar riffs, five piece harmonies and driving basslines. Now on their third album, this is a band at the top of the game, which a greater audience deserves to hear.

  • Derek Degelfoe - 11 years ago

Och eye. Cocos Lovers are the best. I canne get through the dae wiout a wee blast o those beasties.

  • Charlotte Potter - 11 years ago

Cocos Lovers are not only one of the best bands I have seen live, all three of their albums are constantly being played at our house. A top-drawer band!

  • Diane Hadfield - 11 years ago

Why isn't Robb Johnson on this list? I really don't understand.

  • Angie Rance - 11 years ago

Hard call but James Yorkston because he is just so beautifully versatile and one of my favourite live acts of this year (Green Man....amaaaazing), he even got his old pa on stage to sing. His collection of records is also an eclectic delight and have been listening to When The Haar Rolls In on repeat for about a month now.

  • david hugh - 11 years ago

Best harmonies in folk/indie/world music today. Also best rhythm section especially Stewart hughes on drums/percussion, truly amazing.

  • Peter Cocks - 11 years ago

Cocos Lovers... far and away from the rest of the pack, they have left the rest of the genre standing with their harmonies, afro rhythms, diverse world influences, world class musicianship and sheer heart...not to mention their use of the saw.
It is bizarre that this genre defying band have not hit the big time...perhaps they are just too damn good for the mainstream!

  • Neb - 11 years ago

truely full of wonderment and that spangley feeling from many voices singing as one

  • Tracey Rose - 11 years ago

Cocos Lovers have that extra that is very difficult to describe. They work together to write the lyrics and music and really have ownership of their music and performance. Having seen them live many times I listen to their three albums a lot and they are just as good on disc (although Will's intros are missing!).
You certainly should play them on BBC Radio 6 Music (lots of times).

  • Lindsay - 11 years ago

All three albums are fantastic but I can't get enough of this one! Such amazing talent!

  • Frank Spicer - 11 years ago

Cocos Lovers do it for me every time. Real troubadors. Long experience and fresh ideas put them at the forefront of our local, nationwide and even European (I hear they recently played by Lake Garda, Italy) music scene. When was the last time you heard someone play the saw? F xxx

  • Sophie Cooper - 11 years ago

Rachael Dadd for the win. She makes totally honest music and her live shows are just captivating.

  • jonny2hands - 11 years ago

Cocos lovers because they made me dance like there were ants in my pants. And because their music is immediately accessible but rewards you the more you listen. Their arrangements are clever but uncomplicated and they somehow manage to carry off all that energy and subtlety in a live mix. Also I heard they need more royalties after some Italian fashion designer woman (who was ridiculed on Britain's got talent) stole twelve and a half grand off them or something. I'm not sure if that's totally accurate but you should still play them.

  • Jem Millar - 11 years ago

Cocos Lovers refuse to retread old ground, instead they bring an innovative and fresh approach to each new recording. Having seen them live on numerous occasions, the energy and vibe that flows through the show is often more reminiscent of a salsa club at times, so much better and so much more than just another folk band performance.

  • Kevin de Silva - 11 years ago

They are a great live band both in a stage setting and in an impromptu amps off middle of a field way. They really can play the instruments . and fully understand harmony. Which is how folk music should , as far as I am concerned . Their live sets get people up and jigging about
There is nothing samey about their sound its just great . They also manage to capture the sound on their recording which is something not all bands achieve.
They defiantly deserve lots of air play.

  • Tim OT - 11 years ago

Musically they're ace, tight as hell and great to watch live. Just as importantly: they ignite a sense of community, which I feel is one of the most attractive features of folk music. Bands like Cocos Lovers are to be cherished.

  • Jennifer Atkins - 11 years ago

Cocos Lovers obviously have deep roots in folk music, yet, the subtle incorporation of African /world music sound shows how they are trying to evolve the genre perhaps. What is more alternative than the theory of evolution?

Cocos Lovers are a mesmeric live band, that translates onto recordings with ease... They deserve to be played on BBC radio 6 music. On a heavy rotation.

  • David T-W - 11 years ago

    A top-notch live band.

  • Arthur Smuggler - 11 years ago

    Totally fresh folk!
