13 Engines, Chris Isaak, Lou Reed, Television Personalities were '89 standouts for me. Also one I wrote in - ARMISTICE DAY by Band of Outsiders with Nikki Sudden (RIP). recorded live at CBGB 11/11/88. Nikki mentions this live album date in his posthumous memoir. And Band of Outsiders have just released a new album.
I think we need to vote on the whole album and if we still listen to it today, not just by a song or two off the album. CVB and The Cure will get my vote for the fact that the whole album I can pull up and listen to it today as I did back in 1989. The Pixies, not so much, maybe a song or two.
Great year...so tough to settle on a final 10, but I'm happy with my list.
In order of preference:
1.) The Pixies- Doolittle (absolutely a masterpiece of crunchy, quirky, guitar-driven rock and harbinger of Alt-rock brilliance to come in the awesome 90's)
2.) The Cure- Disintegration (their best album by far...Pictures of You is sublime)
3.) Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique (Hip-hop's wall of sound...Genius)
4.) Faith No More- The Real Thing (Fiery opening salvo of rap-metal revolution)
5.) De La Soul- 3 Feet High and Rising (If only the intellectual curiosity of the Native Tongues had bested the thuggish idiocy of NWA...if only)
6.) Nine Inch Nails- Pretty Hate Machine (skin-scraping industrial from the King of the genre, Trent Reznor)
7.) Operation Ivy- Energy (only album from Bay Area ska-punks had fun to spare)
8.) Lou Reed- New York (led by biting single "Dirty Blvd.", Reed's best after the 70's. RIP.)
9.) Red Hot Chili Peppers- Mother's Milk (infectious breakthrough album)
10.) Tin Machine- Tin Machine (underrated Alterna-hard rock from Bowie and band).

Tough year, 1989. Camper Van Beethoven's Key Lime Pie and the Pixies Doolittle are two of my all time favorite albums and always have been. The rest is much more difficult. It was hard to pick 10 albums that I still like here. Meat Puppets "Monsters" is a good album. Neil Young's "Freedom" isn't here, but that was never a real favorite of mine anyhow.
1989 was one of the best years ever for music! I was 16, and music mattered so much!
