Either ADA Landon is evil and after the gem & beast for nefarious purposes but more likely, she is looking for her husband who studyed beasts and she thinks these guys can help her locate him or more information about his whereabouts. She did mention that her husband had been looking into the gem and its historical significance when he was "killed".
I don't think she is evil but I think she knows a lot more then she is letting on. ;)
