I doubt it will win, and you'll need to do some major saving up, but you really, really have to go to the Waterside Inn. Despite it's three star reputation, and huge bill, it's a remarkably relaxed room and the service is excellent. And the food....probably the best all-round meal I've ever had. Knocks places like The Ledbury into a tin hat. Not that The Ledbury isn't great, but this place was just a whole step above. Ok, so it's very classical French (though they have lightened it up somewhat), but I've never had a meal as superb from start to finish.

If you can, stay over - the rooms are about £200 (which isn't too bad for a room above a three Michelin star place) and the breakfast pastries are lovely. All in all, just do it. And don't think too much about the bill.

And then you can go to the Hinds Head the next day. Mmm, scotch eggs.

I voted for this restaurant as I lived in St Margarets when I was a nipper till 1960 and cant imagine it having anywhere great to go, but would love it to be so.

It would be interesting to see your view on La Gavroche. Lots of reports about people who love Michel Roux on telly turned off by sniffy french waiters who see us less than millionaire punters as something on the bottom of your shoe.

Try Brula in St Margarets, Twickenham - I think iy is a great French Bistro type restaurant, but have not been there for a while.... so your opinion would be most welcome. I'm quite happy to be your +1 as I live very close to it in the village of St Margarets!
