Anyone that even has to ask this question obviously doesn't have any clue.

Cheerleading is a sport because when they stunt they are putting each other's life on the line. This sport is as dangerous as any other sport, but this sport has trust. If you are a flyer you have to trust your bases and back spot. If they don't trust their bases they need to start. Yes, they will fall. Look from a base point of view if you don't catch her what's gonna happen she's gonna fall from +30 feet in the air. Me I'm all of the above base, flyer, and back spot. I've broken so many bones. I put my trust in my team, and they put their trust in me. So I recommend that you should help pass this law. We do more dangerous things than other sports. People it takes a lot to put trust into people. When cheerleaders are in a compatition they can't stop if they get hurt. They have to keep stunting, tumbling, etc. So don't tell me basketball is a sport and cheerleading is not. I'm not joking. If you disagree you try it.

Now you know -- that might be a woman's sport: Fighting and advocating the mundane. Along with shopping, alimony seeking . . . you know -- the typical.

  • Reasonable person - 10 years ago

If you have to fight and advocate for your activity to be a sport then it's not a sport.

  • A Guy - 10 years ago

Any activity involving women is not a sport. If voting yes, then be prepared to vote stripping as a sport.

I think it is a sport. To support my belief here is the definition of a sport according to Wikipedia:"port (or sports) is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which,[1] through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators.[2] Hundreds of sports exist, from those requiring only two participants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals.

Sport is generally recognised as activities which are based in physical athleticism or physical dexterity"
I believe cheerleading meets those qualifications.

Finally! Cheerleading used to be a "popularity contest" but it has became a true sport that is extremely competitive and challenging. Cheerleading now requires a lot of athletic ability and as much commitment as any other sport.

My daughter has cheer practice 3 days a week. They use the football players weight room and run track! YES it is a sport! They are not just in the weight room for play. They have vigorous workouts! They run several miles each practice! YES YES YES, it's a SPORT!

Jimbo Seather, That was ridiculous! Just shows how ignorant you are to the issue.

What makes it not a sport?

I believe competitive cheerleading is definitely a sport. 1 team with 1 goal to win. We might have competitions spread throughout the year, rather than a "short season w/ many games." But still, my question remains.. What makes it not a sport? No ball? - Swimming. No goal lines? There are four lines in competitive cheerleading that can cost us our whole "game." We have objectives, points, strategies, skills, referees, pre-game warm ups.. Just like the others.

    Sincerely,

Former Cheerleader from Rec leagues, Middle School, High School, Competitive Cheerleader, and Collegiate Cheerleader. You might say I'm biased -- I'd say I'm informed.

    sport; noun
: a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other

I, and I suspect many others, consider something a sport only when it is done in competition with others with the goal of "winning". The above definition comes from Merriam Webster dictionary.

Therefore, I absolutely consider competitive cheerleading a sport. However, if it's just a school squad cheering on their football/basketball/whatever team, then no that would technically not be a sport according to the definition of the word.

Just because it requires great athletic ability and carries the risk of injury does not classify an activity as a "sport". Think about it. People go to the gym to work out. They may be super athletic, and yes you can injure yourself in the gym. So is "working out" a sport? No. Because you are not competing.

I'm not taking anything away from cheerleaders in that I know how hard they work, train, practice, how seriously they take it, and how easily they can get injured. That's all very true and valid. I'm simply going by the actual definition of the word. Competition is the key component of a "sport".

  • Jimbo Seather - 10 years ago

Just because you can be injured doing it doesn't mean it's a sport. I got carpal tunnel from masturbating. That doesn't make it a sport.

  • Jenny Dowdy - 10 years ago

YES YES YES! I have experienced first hand the injuries that cheerleading can cause. I tore my ACL my senior year of high school which meant that I couldn't try out to cheer anywhere in college. This was so devastating to me because of the long 9-month recovery that put a real damper on my senior year. Along with that, I also broke my foot, and many other minor injuries throughout the years. Coaches are not properly trained and are most likely former cheerleaders and the right measures are not being taken in order to assure safety for cheerleaders. Cheerleading NEEDS to be called a sport to help with the injuries and the aftermath of these.

Anyone that has a child that is a cheerleader knows that IT IS a sport. One of the hardest sports out there. The amount of athletic ability that it requires is unbelievable. It only takes one time of watching an all-star squad perform to know that this in deed is a sport. Our male cheerleaders have stated that it is more intense and harder than any other sport they have played including an not limited to basketball and football.

  • Shanna Rucker - 10 years ago

I can't imagine what those folks that voted NO, is thinking! Ages are getting younger and younger with all the "air gymnastics." I have a high school daughter that is a cheerleader. She has been injured several times but thankfully not a serious injury. Its very rigorous work! The pride and spirit that these young kids bring is FANTASTIC! I, myself, was a cheerleader. Those days were hard but now, like everything through the years, cheerleading has changed drastically! YES! IT IS A SPORT!

  • Lynn Hamer - 10 years ago

Obviously those that don't think so have never watched practices or taken time to consider the UNBELIEVABLE athletic ability cheerleaders have to have to excel at their sport. Watch an all-star squad practice, watch the height to which they fly, the weight the bases lift, etc....you better believe it should be classified as a sport.
