Give Irish people a vote and you will get YOUR Answer
The last time(2004) when Michael McDowell held a citizenship referendum to end the automatic right to Irish citizenship it was 80% in favour of changing the law to restrict migration.
Give Irish people a vote again on making 20,000 or unknown quantity of illegal to legal ....
Suspect you already know the answer
Common sense tells you .....currently we have a housing crisis and cannot house our own people
or get jobs for 8% of them without adding an additional or unknown quantity of Illegal economic migrants
which would probably closer to 80,000 when word gets out ! ( like it did in Germany last year !)
For those of you with Rose tinted glasses ....look at what happening in Sweden where
upto 20% of the population has flooded in the past few years.

Summary: Serious crimes against women and crime levels in general have increased exponentially
Now Sweden are looking to repatriate 80,000 illegals

undocumented. Have my own family miles away from here. All we want is regularization of the undocumented workers in order for us to work without fear of deportation, to be able to go home and come back to work. All we want is to be able to provide for our families legally.

Ireland, as a traditional and continuing emigrant country, should be generous with immigrants.
Jim Fuery - 11 years ago
The poll refers to these people as illegal immigrants but if we were polling on Irish people seeking regularisation we would refer to them as the undocumented. Double standards, it's time to grant these people the chance of a proper life in Ireland. Allow them to work legally, to participate fully in our society & build a better future for themselves and their families.

I am 8 years in Ireland. Undocumented have a job but treating like slaves. We have no right, we can't even talk because we are afraid of loosing that job and thinking what will we do then. Who ever is dealing with the undocumented i pray god for them to give them energy to fight and hopefully we will get our goal.

Agree totally Angela. Unlike Mr. Hook, and his 'right' wing viewpoints straight out of the Rush Limbaugh handbook - deport them all - should there not be more humanism and less fear of what the 'other' as in 'illegal' immigrant might bring!!? As a former 'illegal' in the US in the 80s, before I became 'legal' ... the branding of my humanity as something other wasn't very nice when all I wanted was a better way of life! The EU with it's free labor movement is welcome! Capital is free to move on a daily basis in world trading, so should labor! I'm sure Mr. Hook enjoys the enhanced service by immigrants in Irish hotels as he sips his G & T's...!

Irish government has campaigned for decades for Irish undocumented to be legalised in US. We should extend same rights here.
