I don't think the bible is written not only to be applicable to priest or only to specific events. If such practice was condemned in the old testament and even in the new testament then why accept it now?

If being pure secular is a total separation from the moral code of the bible then where would secular base itself from? In fact how would a secular republic decide what is moral and not?

Indeed, we are not living in those times but would it be safe to say it's not applicable in our generation? Because the bible forewarned us of what happened in the past and many believe it does so too of what will be ahead of us.

Bible is written for those who wants to seek the truth and who would want to follow. Which is why it says "Whomsoever believe in Him shall not perish, but will have everlasting life" It's clearly a choice and us Christians are not imposing but spreading the Gospel.

    1. We live in a secular republic NOT a theocracy. The fact that some people believe that their religion teaches that same sex activity is sinful is not relevant. The 1st Amendment protects the rights of all people, regardless of their religious beliefs or lack of them, from having the religious beliefs of others forced upon them. That means if you think something is a sin then by all means you have the right to not engage in that activity. It does not mean you can force others to follow your beliefs. My grandparents believed that eating pork, shellfish, cheeseburgers not to mention any work done between sundown Friday and sundown Saturday was sinful. They did not go around trying to force people to stop eating barbequed pork ribs, shrimp or opening their business on a Saturday.

    2. Those who trot out quotes like the one mentioned about need to actually learn what it is they are talking about. The Leviticus 20:13 quote given about is about a Jewish priest engaging in specific pagan religious rituals involving temple sexual rites with a person of the same gender. There is a similar quote found elsewhere in Leviticus which simply forbids regular men folks from doing the same pagan rituals but without the death penalty.

That being said, Christians do not not follow the Purity Code found in Leviticus at all. IN fact they claim they are freed from doing so because they are Christians. So they are not required to circumcise their sons. They do not have to follow the dietary rules. They can wear whatever clothing they wish. Menstruating women need not separate themselves from their menfolks. They do not refrain from working on the Shabbat. In fact they do not observe the Shabbat rituals at all. Now the simple fact is that Leviticus is not a buffet line in a Chinese restaurant where you pick and choose what you wish and leave the rest. You follow all of it or none it.

Then we have the quote from Romans 1:24-27. Here again we have an example of cherry picking a gobbet of scripture and ignoring the internal context of the quotation. The quotation is taken form a portion of an Epistle written by Paul in which he is specifically condemning a very specific group of people who are involved in very specific activity. Namely they are participating in the Roman pagan religious rituals of that time period. This includes apostate Christians. Some of these ritual such as those involved in the worship of Bacchus involved consumption of copious quantities of wine and other intoxicants as well as orgiastic sexual activity which involved same sex and heterosexual activity. So again we do not have a quote which stands for the proposition it is being used for. It is not a wholesale condemnation of homosexuality as we use that term in modern society today. Instead it is condemning people who are engaged in sexual activity with priests and priestesses of pagan cults, among other things.

The fact is that neither Jesus nor Paul ever discuss homosexuality as we use that term. In fact Jesus engages in an interaction with a Roman centurion asking for Jesus to heal his servant and the language used in the original text makes it clear exactly what type of relationship this centurion has with his servant. Now Jewish culture condemned certain types of behavior found among the Greeks and Romans as sinful but that was simply because it was behavior often associated with the pagan gods of these cultures which both the Greeks and Romans attempted to force the Jews to accept.

We do not live in those times. No one is forcing a Christian church to perform same sex marriages. No one is forcing heterosexual Christians to engage in same marriages. What is happening is that those who do not believe same sex marriage is sinful and wish to be married to their partner are having that right to marry acknowledged.

In the words of the comedian Daniel Tosh "What do the faithful care what the homosexuals do on Earth? It is not like God is going to let them into Heaven."

Wait..even my quarter says that too. In God We trust. That's like a tatoo in there, how do you erase that?

  • Lucy - 9 years ago

Not many people are good in Constitutions. All we know is that whenever we use our dollar bill it clearly says
"In God We Trust" - If the bible is not even used as a basis for any of our constitution or what not. Then they should have started of removing that from the dollar bill first. Otherwise, its very misleading.

? Would the Supreme Court approve same sex marriage? Yes, I believe it will based on the U.S.Constitutional separation of State (Government) and Freedom of Religion (Church). I don't believe the Constitution ref. any Bible verse anywhere on the document.

  • Lucy - 9 years ago

After reading all these. Makes me wonder what is our Government and our Church thinking?! Were creating all these programs through media and tabloids to teach our kids to accept what they have become. But, where are our efforts on showing them the bible teachings and opening their eyes for the consequences for the choices they make? The choice will surely be theirs, but let's not leave this very important information.

I read the past two comments before Leann and I didn't see any "hate" words in them. Googled those very verse and it was accurate and spot on. It was simply stating was was written in the Bible. I would probably answer this guy straight from the bible too what happens to "gays" specifically.

  • Leann - 9 years ago

Yes! It's unfortunate that those that speak of God's words use it with such hate. It's unfortunate that people opposed of gays waste half their day trying to preach how gays are an abomination when the truth is... Those that spread hatred are the abomination themselves. We don't need more hatred sprea across the world. We need people who are compassionate, forgiving and nonjudgmental. Prayers will be said for you. I'll pray that you receive a bigger heart to love, a bigger mind to really understand that the world doesn't just work YOUR way, and I'll pray for your soul so you can be less angry. #OneLove #Equality

    Leviticus 20:13

If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

    Romans 1:24-27

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

It's about time. Gays and lesbians are created in the image of God and deserve marriage equality period.
