Until the 1990's, Dutchess County had untold numbers of sports stars. The City of Poughkeepsie Little league had Eddie Lopat, former Yankee great in 1960, IBM Poughkeepsie Watson Awards Dinner had Bob Richards, Olympic gold medalist and other stars. IBM hosted Mickey Mantle a few times, Digger Phelps, Walt Frazier, Oscar Robertson, Jeff Torborg, Bill Mazer, and others. Knights of Columbus in Wappingers Falls had Emerson Boozer, Joe Morrison, Jackie Farrell. Wappingers Area Pop Warner had Dale Memmalaar former NFL star, Joe Tomlins the man who created Pop Warner and Joe Morrison thanks to local beer and tavern owners. Town Of Wappingers Little league had Joe Pepitone . Marist College had Marv Albert, Warner Wolf, Al McGuire and the Digger Phelps Roast which was in October ,1980 featuring a number of College Coaches. The Phleps roast was shown on Sportschannel. The Night Of Champions have hosted stars such as NY Jet Randy Rasmussen. Many of these events were the cost of the meal. Maybe 3 bucks to see the star and get snacks and a drink. Today it is costly.
