I am glad to hear the agreement has been ratified and the majority voted for the agreement. I am a new OPSer so I'm not liking the freezes and such but I would rather have a job then be out for months. Everyone is saying its a huge financial hit when you go on strike and usually when you come back from strike the deal you get is even worse.

I do agree the voting info wasn't really advertised I had a few people that didn't know, so we gathered together and drove together over to the ambassador :)

I have also heard that even when on strike some staff will take the subway in and "sneak" into work, where as if I did that i might get my tires slashed....no real solidarity there Smokey.......shame on those people

I've been on strike twice as well like many of my co-workers. What I don't understand was the lack of "advertising" by the union to the members. The last 2 times I voted on a collective agreement, there were posters, local reps came around with little handouts and encouraged people to vote and everyone knew. I realize we are in a more social media age and everything is online but some people just delete. My co-workers where I work called other OPSEU offices to see what the general opinion was on the vote. You know what? THEY DIDN"T KNOW WHERE OR WHEN WE WERE VOTING...hadn't heard a thing. If we end up going out, I hope it won't be determined by the few that knew about the vote. And for those who missed our vote yesterday, I hope the votes of the few don't determine your Christmas.. It's a little rough to buy gifts (let alone pay bills) with know money coming in. Just Sayin.

I agree that the President can offer his views, that's what it's all about. But having been on strike twice, all I can say is, if you vote against, you don't know what you are in for. It's brutal and financially you never recover. Hope you have enough money saved to cover your rents and mortgages for several months, because it would likely be a long one. I get that younger members feel pissed off, but you know what? The union says this is the best they could get, I for one, believe them. This is already a year behind. Just opinions.

Good Morning. Unfortunately I am not able to vote as I am retired. However, I will say that Smokey has been around for a good number of Tentative Agreements and should know what the pros and cons are regarding this particular agreement. If he does not feel that this is in the best interest of the members then the members should take a second look at the agreement. Have we not had enough taken away from us already? What more can the Government take away from us ( benefits, wages, termination pay and what else)? I realize that nobody recovers 100% from a strike and this is what the Government is counting on, but do you want to work for 20 or 30 years paying for something that will not be around when you need it when you decide to retire. What about your children that decide to make a Government job their career, do they deserve to work for the next 20-30 years to end up with nothing?

    To Bess Yuen:

    Sister

This is a democratic country and one of the beautiful things about it, it gives us the freedom of expression. Just as I respect your views and opinions, the President of the Union should be able to express his views.

The government little by little is abrogating many of the benefits. Since 1996 the government has been taking away benefits and they will continue to do so. Mark my word. If one looks at how governments throughout the world are treating their employees and removing their benefits, one realizes that this is a concerted effort to privatize all government service and to have just a few friends around.

Frank, nobody appreciates your opinion more than me. The bargaining team recommends we accept. I will vote to accept. I will further give my support and confidence to the bargaining that perhaps they can roll this back in 2 years and 6 weeks when we start the process again. In solidarity, Deryck

I do not think the president of a local should be going on social media & trying to sway votes, one week before the voting & after the info sessions are done. The union has an obligation to represent everyone, irregardless of # of years of service. Those of us who have been here a long time, have sacrificed. And those of us who attended the info sessions heard that this was the best deal that could be worked out. Bear in mind that if the offer is rejected, the employer is not obligated to bargain. And if we go on strike - which the reps from bargaining team said would be probable if offer is rejected- you never recover from a strike!
So I'd appreciate the president abstaining from any more attempts to sway votes and let people have hard facts and their own voice in choosing! Submitted by Bess & Kathy

I'm voting Against the proposed tentative agreement. I don't see this being a good deal for our current workers.. workers who are less than 10, 20 or 30 years with the service. This deal would be bad.
