Some Mayors do go out of their way to help our community. The thing is , we don't need vice mayors and the government can save a lot of money if they eliminate these positions as well as the number of Senators we have. We can do with at least 5 Senators instead of 15. The mayors council and their staff are hard working people who I believe care for our community and want only the best for the people of our Island.

Just put it up for a vote (like a special election in the month of December) and include write-ins to make sure the election board counts every vote by hand so that there is no confusion. All the raises were voted on by those who stand to gain from a yes vote and it was never brought before the people. If all of you deserve a raise then you'll have nothing to fear, but those of you who have already received a raise or a bonus from any government employee or branch of any kind cannot vote. That should be the penalty for voting on a bill that was never brought before the people by the people!
If you lose you can than pay back all those retro bonuses and the difference for all the pay that you have received before taxes were ever taken out. The repayment can be tracked publicly so the people can clearly see who the real crooks are and everyone will be able to see who all the crooks were when this scandal came out!

I vote to make the Governors pay and the Lt. Governors pay at $35,000 and $30,000 per year.
Senators pay should be at $28,000
Mayors and Vice Mayors should be at $25,000 and $23,000 per year.
Sounds idiotic ? But just imagine if that pay existed?
Then those who are willing to serve at such a low salaries will truly be defined as servants and not self serving.
It would be nice to for them to see and feel how families and people with such low incomes manage and juggle finances to make ends meet. Once they understand how the low income families feel then maybe they can advocate legislation that helps the poor and needy.
I am tired of politicians using the poor for their campaigns and once they get in office they poor remain poor and the rich get richer.
If Politicians want a true understanding of the poor, then become one. Take the job at the average low income family rate. Then we will see if your campaign speeches carry a more sincere tone and understanding of how one lives from paycheck to paycheck.
Then lets see if you want to run for re-election.

Everyday Joe is right, "Hold them ALL truly accountable to their non-appropriated budget failures and successes. If the Mayor can't account for that funding in particular, how can they be trusted to run anything else." I'm tired of the sad excuses for funds from the carnival, to the various fundraising efforts through the Municipal Planning Councils, cockfights, bingos, poker, and other donated resources and equipment unaccounted for. Let's start measuring the true performance of mayors, vice-mayors, village council members, judges, senators, governor and lt. governors. While we're at it, why not tie their raises to the ratio of minimum living wage of the lower working class and see how fast things change. Same with GDOE Jon Fernandez, tie his salary and contract (same as his deputies) to the UOG/GCC placement scores of incoming college students.

Return the raise - Guam is at least 1.57 billion dollars in debt.

  • registered voter - 8 years ago

no! neither should the senators or the executive branch.. all that money they gave for raises could go to the schools. there sre still kids that are not allowed to take books home for homework cause not enough books. lets not repeal the raises then after the election give the raises back to each other.. SHAME ON YOU POLITICIANS THAT MADE THIS HAPPEN!!!!! the only reason why you are making a big stink about it now cause its time for re-election and the simon sanchez poll that the students did make you guys look bad!!!!

NO///// THE ONLY ONE THAT WOULD KEEP HIS OR HER PAY IS IF THEY HAVE NO RETIREMENT FROM THE FEDERAL GOV T OR GOV T GUAM, BUT MOST OF THE MAYORS ARE RETIRED FROM THE FEDERAL GOV T OR GOV GUAM AND ALSO RECEIVING SOCIAL SER THESE ARE THE ONE THAT SHOULD GIVE UP THEIR RAISES. WHAT I PROPOSE IS GET RID OF THE MAYORS AND USE THE ADMIN ASST OF THE 13 SENATORS AND ASSIGN THEM A VILLAGE TO TAKE OFF THINK OF THE MONEY THE ISLAND WILL BE SAVING...

  • Kim Cruz - 8 years ago

Certain Mayors certainly deserve a pay raise . I think the the constituents should decide on that.
There are certain Mayors that go out of their way to help out the people of their village and even provide financial support using their own money, Mayor Rudy Mantanane is a good example.
I'm not from Yigo but I wish Rudy was our Mayor.
The Mayor in my village difficult to get in touch with. I leave messages with the staff but just to be ignored. my request/complaints are answered with excuses. These kind of Mayors certainly don't deserve a pay raise !

I vote no. Gov Guam can't afford it.

  • dj wilson - 8 years ago

do they really do their work? it always appear that there are always on some meeting. NO. . . we need less MAYOR AND VICE MAYORS. IT SEEMS LIKE THEY ARE THERE BUT NO SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OR EXCUSES AND MORE EXCUSES. GUAM IS A SMALL ISLAND, TECHNOLOGY IS ABOUND.

  • Rube - 8 years ago

I vote no because the only thing that mayor is good for is going off island.

  • Dededo Resident - 8 years ago

No they shouldn't keep their pay raises. I still see trash and potholes on the roads. The legislature should also reduce the amount of mayors and vice mayors we have on the island, it will lessen the burden of tax payer's money and the money could be use on public safety, infrastructures, and education.

  • Mayors council - 8 years ago

Replace legislature with the mayors council. They get nothing done too. But we would save millions.

  • Everyday Joe - 8 years ago

The Mayors can keep their pay if they agree that they need to be consolidated, most especially Agana/Agana Heights, Asan, Maina, & Piti, because of low comparable populations. Same goes for other small poplation villages. Allow for up to two Vice Mayors where consolidation occurs. Dededo, Yigo, Mangilao, TTH (Tanuning/Tumon/Harmon) deserve at least two Vice Mayors, larger budgets, and staffing, while the others who consolidate can be cut to about 2/3. Hold them ALL truly accountable to their non-appropriated budget failures and successes. If the Mayor can't account for that funding in particular, how can they be trusted to run anything else.

  • juan malamanga - 8 years ago

mayor of hagatna should get paid very less, nothing he does except travel, and mayor of deeded all she does is goes to manila they should have a record when they go off island personal or business so that we can show and angel sablan is the money spender never at his office according to staff, and the mayor of agana heights is never in his office, according to tommy gutierrez my buddy said the mayor is never in his office cause his blind.

  • juan malamanga - 8 years ago

  • Islander 2 - 8 years ago

TaoTao Recind Their Pay Raise Hao ! Stop the greedy excuses to keep the money you don't deserve ! Where's the money for my tax refunds ? Where's the money for our " secure our schools " program ? Where's the money to repair / renovate Simon Sanchez high ? Band-Aid fixes ? Really ? Where's the money ? Where's is our tax money going towards ? So many really bad problems occurring on island and there is no money to address it , why do our government officials think they deserve this pay raise ? What have they done to prove their worth? Recind all government pay raise's ! That's the right thing to do ! Thanks Gov Guam !

  • Islander 2 - 8 years ago

@ken Espinosa , that's their job description isn't it ? They do the bare minimum to solve each village problem but never actually fixes said problems , I see the same pot hole's on the same roads , the same illegally dumped trash on the same street , the same stray dogs running around , the parks look like crap , the recreational area's lack lighting and look like crap , etc.... The mayor is really good on fundraising , village fiestas , cockfighting that I attend on occasions and the carnival they devote their time planning and not to forget they are excellent in complaining to the Legislature and the Governor of the lack of funds to tackle above mentioned problems . Where is the money going ? What are the Mayor's spending their budget on ? The money raised in every fundraising event / carnival/casino is spent on what ? Why isn't there a paper trail or reciepts of payment for services or repairs etc... Why so many off-island trips ? When will my mayor tackle the problems we complain about ?
And yes , I did call and request for the mayor to solve these issues . Nothing really has been done , only temporary fixes with the least amount of money spent .

  • Ken Espinosa - 8 years ago

These people who voted no for the mayors do not realize that the mayors are the first public official to respond to their neefs. They are the hands on frontline people who are immediately there in their respective village. You don't see the governor or the Lt governor the senators the directors getting wet dirty looking for those that need help. In fact they're in an aircondition protected building.
