Although I am still covered through my employer, the "Affordable Care" fiasco led my financial analyst to recommend I work an additional year beyond what was initially anticipated, due to the now much higher cost of purchasing individual healthcare coverage post retirement (pre Medicare). Like all massive government programs, the cost is astronomical when compared to the number of individuals benefitting.

I'm buying from healthcare.gov because my employer does not have a large enough presence in the US currently to qualify for a group plan. The options are terrible and I'm in that "middle class" group that gets no subsidy from the government and is extremely limited in choices. Basically $14K+ for the insurance and an out of pocket of over $8K for my family before the insurance company pays for anything. Special thanks to President Obama for "lowering my costs!" I'm now out of pocket on yearly expenses more than twice what i previously paid when eligible for an employer-based plan and can't go without insurance due to the health of my wife. I guess there are now more than 3 great lies!!!

My health insurance ranks 3rd among reasons for my leaving contracting and jumping back to full-time, behind growth/future opportunity and work/life balance. At less than 30/pay period, it is no doubt a rare rate. Indeed, it may go up in 2017. Being a millennial, I'm more focused on the defacto policy of no work after hours or while on PTO. The former is almost as strictly enforced as the latter--and I consider that a health benefit as well.

While Obamacare isn't perfect it has resulted in many receiving insurance they could not otherwise afford. As one of those, I have come to believe that the majority of those opposed to the Marketplace option for purchasing insurance and the available subsidies are those that either have other affordable options available or choose to be uninsured. While choosing to be uninsured and paying the penalty might be cheaper in the near term, electing to utilize this option has provided protection for the health of my family.

Until a better option becomes available- either through my employer, the government or the insurance carriers - the Marketplace is available for those like myself who without insurance would either have no healthcare options or utilize services without the ability to pay.
