eQuest is my all time favorite for energy modeling
Jeffrey ogle - 9 years ago
Us In California are stuck useing energy pro or cbec.com, basically you build your model press calculate and hope it run without errors. Then when it runs half the time you get to spend several hour fudging the number to get compliance. Trace is a pain in the but butt although I find it to be one of the most accurate and detailed that I have used.

To me, Sefaira's the only one that's pleasing.
For I, a humble project architect,
Am finally empowered to connect
my audience with graphics that add value,
and that's important, let me tell you...
Sefaira lets me compare strategies super fast
to beat my competition at long last.
Now, I'll keep admiring my mech engineers
Your sizing and compliance deserve all of our cheers!
Instead of making purpose driven models that take days,
in Sefaira, I load up my SKP and RVTs - that's the easy way!
For I know that when the competitions deadlines loom,
the one software that will save me from project doom,
the one to compare daylight & energy in seconds flat,
with a great UI and even greater support (if I need that),
the one that'll get my rah, rah, rah--
Is my one and only Sefaira!

I would like to remind everyone here to be civil. Also, did you know that IES's internal engine name is "slowcore"? That is all.
Andrew, thanks for the mention of EDSL's TAS software. We have come a long way in the last 4 years with regards to capabilities for the US market. We have a new innovative plant and controls design application with fast multiple-core enabled simulation. We are still fast and robust. Best, Michael Sawford (EDSL)
Dear Adam T
Thank you for your comments. I'm the product manager at Sefaira (and a very experienced energy modeller too who has used a lot of these products!)
It's unfortunate you or your firm got the impression Sefaira is for UK compliance. It is not and as far as I know there is nothing in our sales or marketing literature that says so.
Sefaira is designed to make it easy for all design practitioners to do quick efficient studies up to around the end of schematic design.
I do not know of any of our customers who have genuinely tried to use Sefaira for a code submission. It would be hard.
The whole point of sefaira is to be fast and easy to use. This makes it good when there is a lot of change and not much fee for doing analysis.
For us it's really nice to see our product somehow get voted as "favourite interface" because we put a huge amount of thought and effort into that interface. We try really hard to make our layout intuitive so our users don't need much training and have specialists on the team whose job is just to optimise that aspect of the product.
I'm my mind there is a good case for different tools at different stages of the project. As a consultant I almost never carried the same TAS model from SD into DD and I'd be lucky if the results matched between stages. If that sounds familiar why not use a faster tool at SD?
So in short our goal is to offer people a way to save time and have fun doing concept and Schematic analysis.
Again my apologies if you bought it looking for something else. Feel free to reach out directly if you'd like me to walk you through how it could bring value to your business in different ways.
Best regards,
Andrew Corney PE, MASHRAE, MCIBSE.
Product Director, Sefaira

What a waste of time.

Interesting results...My company tried Sefaira after they were claiming it could be used for UK Regulations on their website. We were interested, but after using it we quickly found it was not suitable as it wasn't approved software. In fairness, when we asked about this they said the claim was for early stage design towards UK Compliance. But that is pointless if you want to go from start to finish. Why would we pay only to go and use SBEM in IES which is approved for UK Regs, and they give away for free?
For design Sefaira was ok, but to me it didn't have the flexibility or substance that IES-VE offers, that we're used to. The amount of detail you can get into by using it still makes my head spin.
I get this may be off-putting to architects or M&E consultants, who from speaking to, seem to only be interested in a quick result, and not in truly validating their great designs.
My company attended the CIBSE TM54 talk where IES were putting across their case about closing the performance gap and the tools they are developing to help us do just that. Using these tools we envisage real time, real numbers from which we can suggest real solutions.
At the end of the day we should all be gunning for great performing buildings that reduce our clients operation costs and therefore save them money, something that can be quantified. For us that is the holy grail and I hope to see more of this from other software too.

Hey IES Fan - I used to think the same thing. The truth is that pretty graphs backed up by a powerful engine (EnergyPlus), with comparative cloud simulations done in minutes NOT DAYS, is what sells projects and builds business. Those projects pay your salary. That's why I use Sefaira. It has paid off for our firm in spades.
The modelers mantra: Use the right tools for the job. There are many jobs, and many tools. It takes experience to know which tool to use, and when. But keep an open mind. IES was also new once. By the way, I also use IES and HAP, but Sefaira has saved my backside many more times, especially since I don't need to remodel architecture models all the time. So maybe reach out to the Sefaira team - they really know their stuff, amazing support team.

Sefaira is based on EnergyPlus, Radiance and DaySIM. It's wickedly fast, and has better integration with Revit and SketchUp than any other application listed here. It has doubled our business in the last four years. Learn the facts before making uninformed comments.
IDA ICE is not only the best interface, but also by far the newest technology! The equation based system offers a maximum of flexibility which is unreached by any other tool! Additionally you can simulate envelope, HVAC systems and control strategies all together in one shot! The adaptive timestep is another key advantage compared to all other tools, also the Drag&Drop, Copy&Paste and visualization possibilities! Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zmVZy6_rWU
