depends on the degree. I don't think all colleges give an accurate portrayal of what the typical graduate gets hired doing with that degree. Parents also need to pull the plug on college once a student gets going with a degree but realizes they don't know what they want to do. bring them home, let them get a job until they are more focused. And.... The Federal gov't needs to stop earning money off of student loans.
Get as much education as you can/want. No matter what you do in life turns out to be.
Firstly, it is true: The more you learn...the more you earn; and you don't have to spend mega moolah on tuition. Find a really good two year college; get your average up; get your feet wet; then transfer to the four year college of your choice. I'm telling you nothing takes the wind out of your sails like being a little fish in a big pond!
Secondly, take your time and really research your major! Don't just jump in because it seems like the right thing to do or because all your friends are going in that field. Find a field you can really cut your teeth on!
I say this because I, personally, majored in Philosophy and Literature....and ended up loading and unloading airplanes for thirty years! Just remember, as the ancient Greeks used to say, "Par Ardua Ad Astra"; through hardship to the stars !
Total scam. College campuses look more like country clubs now than places to go to learn. Too much easy money, laid on the backs of financially undisciplined students and parents, to feed into the cash-burning machines these institutions have become. Sadly, the money doesn't even go to teaching salaries -- it usually goes to top-heavy administration, crystal chandeliers in the dining hall and commissioned carved stonework for the arched entrance to the campus.
The designer price tag college/university with the "name" attached probably isn't worth the cost to most, but a college degree is very important. You don't have to go into a ridiculous amount of debt to better your chances of landing a good job. I think more importantly is your flexibility after the degree is earned to go where the jobs are. Research an employable major and not just a degree for the sake of a degree. My son did a lot of research into what fields were hiring (and that those fields were here to stay) & the percentage of students finding work right out of college for each degree.
