When I was growing up back in the day my , grandmother and all her friends chew betel nut with tobacco leaves (Mickey Twist brand) pupulu leaves and Afok (lime ).
My grandma lived until she was 88 years old, She and her friends never had any health problems due to betel nut chewing.
In the old days Chamorros made their own Afok (lime) and some grew their own tobacco.
Nowadays, I've seen people from Guam and Micronesia add white cement for Afok and tobacco cigarettes in their betel nut mix.
I also know a person who chews betel nut without the lime and tobacco for years and up to now he has no health problems related to betel nut chewing.

In closing, my grandma did not chew betel nut on a daily basis but rather only in social gatherings or when playing Bingo.

Leave the beetle nut alone. As for the chewers that spit, it should be mandatory that they carry a spit can so that they can take their mess back home with them.l

My mother, Grand parents and ancestors chewed beetle nuts, it was never the cause of any health issues! I believe beetle nuts are a part of our island style and to take it away or make it illegal is a crime! Why take something away that has been a part of our heritage! You should have a choose if your going to chew or not but to ban it is ridiculous! I do think that they should stop islanders that spit in public places cause that just is disgusting and ruins our island of Guam! I love my island of Guam and one day plan on retiring there! I just don't want some of our traditions taken away!

Why ban something that has been a part of island culture for generations?its true tobacco is not and this is a major reason of why it is bad but besides that chewing bettlenut should be something all islanders should be proud of because it is a part of many island cultures. Such as some break bread and talk peaceful relations many island cultures used bettlenut. Getting westernized is ok but to look down on your own culture and be disgusted by it is just plain wrong. The so called Chamorros are confused already with all the new cultural additions they have implemented in recent years that chewing bettlenut should be one they enforce and keep. I don't remember ever seeing Chamorros dancing on coconut Palm leaves like they were riding horses in any of my history books by hey whatever floats your boat go for it. All cultures borrow from each other but one thing that was universal was bettlenut chewing and even if you ban it and say no spitting which I agree is very gross when splattered everywhere keep it for those who choose to chew because it is a part of their culture. How about worrying about the real issues and stop nit picking crap to complain about

Yes, if it is chewed like the other islanders that now live in Guam. The amoska (tobacco), afuk (lime), pupulo (leave), young green beetle nuts with husk (when chewed and breaks down to splinters in your mouth, this will get stuck in your gum, throat, stomach lining, and intestines. Also, when people spit, they do not realized that they are polluting the ground and we tend to step on it and carry the bacteria into our automobiles. homes, hospitals, clinics, offices, schools, stores and any place we walk on.
For the matured beetle nuts (yellow or brown), just to chew it without any of the other mixtures I mentioned, it will not harm you if you completely removed the husk and cut it to small pieces. Cracking it with your teeth will ruin you gum and teeth. But as for causing any harm in your organs, nah!
So please let it be known that green beetle nuts (puga') with the yacky stuff added is bad for your health.
I know because I was a flight attendant and we had two passengers on a stretcher on different flights and they did not make it home on my return flight on the island hopper. It was sad because even with the husband being carried in the belly of the aircraft, and the spouse shared with us what happened, she took out her bag of puga and other mixtures and started to chew.
Students as young as 11 years old in middle school chew the puga' or tobaccos....
Stop selling these young puga' and it should be banned and enforce the law about spitting on the ground or any place in this island!
    Si Yu'os ma'ase!
