Raising wages pushes other wages or salaries to go up because the semi-skilled, skilled , and professional employees will ask for increases because the impact cause a wage disparity. The spiral will begin.

I was standing outside the store entrance pumping gas into my truck when I noticed this rude person pull up and block off the handicap parking spot. This individual then proceeded into the store and told the store owner (who happened to be working that day), “give me half the money out of your cash register! If you don’t, I am going to come back there and take it myself!!” Of course the argument continued and the rude individual went behind the counter, pushed the owner out of the way and took half his money!

Walking away the individual looked happy that he now got his “FAIR SHARE” that was owed to him by the greedy store owner. Unfortunately, because this individual and others like him come in every day and take half the money, the greedy store owner had to lay off all his employees.

I asked why they did this to this individual and he said “it’s only fair. Why should this person who makes all this money not share it with me? I have just as much a right to their money as he does because he owns his own business and must be rich!”

And they call that fair??? Seems like it should be against the law? Oh that’s right….it’s called welfare!!

To those who say that small businesses should "share the wealth," don't know how hard it is to run a small business. Raising the minimum wage means less hours and less employees that I can afford to keep on the job. I want you to explain to that employee why I had to lay them off. I want you to explain to my customers why the prices went up. And I want you to know that just because I own a small business doesn't mean I am very rich.

Why does the government choose to stick its nose in this matter. Playing with the free market only allows for more regulations and bureaucratic red tape. Cost of living will go up and there will be less jobs. Small business will downsize and lay people off. Work on the damn cost of living. Raising the minimum wage does not get people off food stamps.

There's a reason why these are entry-level jobs! What about the skilled workers who have been working for years and they still haven't gotten a raise for years and they were never given raises due to hard times.

Many small businesses will have to start to downsize and hire people only on a part-time basis. Minimum Wage goes up, rates, gas, groceries will go up as well. This isn't fair for the skilled workers who never were given the raises they deserve.

I honestly don't care if they raise it or not. I just want to get more people off the streets and into jobs.

This is getting ridiculous. You keep raising the minimum wage and what about the skilled workers. That is getting close to some of the skilled workers pay scale. Minimum wage jobs are just that, minimum wage. These jobs were not designed to work 30 yrs and retire. They are stepping stones. You work these jobs while you learn skills or go to school. Just as a general helper in construction. You start there until you learn a trade the progress. A store stocker, then cashier, to manager hopefully. If you stay at a minimum wage job for 30 yrs then you have no ambition, no drive, and it is time to wake up. That is the problem today, nobody wants more responsibility they just want more money. Good money comes with hard work and responsibility. Not flipping burgers stocking shelves or pumping gas. That's why your parents taught and told you to pay attention in school, learn so you can get a good job and make a good living.

How many small businesses will shut down because they can't afford to pay their employees? Or, they'll just hire less because it isn't affordable? Yes, we all want a better standard of living. To get ahead requires higher skills training &/or a higher education to make more than minimum wage. Don't live beyond your means either.

If you raise the MINIMUM WAGE how will business owners be able to buy that BMW? I know that the small business person struggles as much as some of their workers, but who is it that makes their money for them? And if the business is successful why doesn't the owner share that wealth with those that made it possible?

Life is not about how much you can keep....it's about how much you can give!

@Cha-moron, the dollars you worked for then are worth more if adjusted for inflation today. And you're leaving out a lot of details as to how you got by. You cannot apply your experiences alone to everyone else today, especially if it was half a century ago.
We are no longer living in a post-war world. Offshoring and technological innovations have increased productivity and reduced costs of doing business. If your full-time job condemns you to poverty in this day and age, it's time to adjust wages to a desirable standard of living.

For what reason, ask the senators to give there raises if its really an issue. Another political trick to get votes. I worked minimum wage an manage to build a house and a family. Just work harder, and set goals for yourself.
