Test scores will be lower next year because of the current teacher shortages! Paul Zerzan - I agree with you on the "racket" rip-off from the text book companies. I am a former special education teacher from South Carolina. Prior to the school year, text book companies would solicit schools to adopt their text books because it would help the students' performance on standardized tests. However, with regards to your comment about "rigged" Standardized test scores - In my opinion, the only thing "rigged" are these damn PDN polls. Give me a friggin break - As of 9:57pm this evening - only 210 people chose to participate in this poll? But when there was a poll asking if the senators should repeal their raises, over 5,000 people responded...WTF?!? I guess voting NO on repealing the senators' raises is more important than the education of our children.

Test score are both great and useless. Great as others said, for justifying the educational system and also for letting each individual student understand where they stand among others in the world. It's only a big deal for those that are at the "bottom of the barrel". I disagree with those that blame the educational system, learning is a two sided activity. The teacher explains how things are done in that field of schooling, and the student must understand and learn. Everyone's learning abilities will differ, and the difference can arise from many factors (no interest, no parent support, don't care about school, distracted, poor living condition, etc), the list goes on. With all the gadgets available now, A great deal of students have there minds elsewhere and are distracted from learning. But I will say that there are lots of bright students that help lift the stats up, so thank you for your hard work, and keep it up. My advice, is to work hard and do better than you have. Don't worry about the average scores, just study as much as you can to stay above the average. And for those that are failing, stop playing and having fun, make more time to study and learn, it will pay off in the future. Take advantage of the "FREE" public school system, I'm sure if you had to pay for education you may have a different attitude. So parents, do your part to support and keep track of your kids after school. Sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone (if I did).

If you have questions about the scores, attend the board meetings... and if you can't ask if they can put it at a more decent time rather than weekday mornings. When I went to school many moons ago, my ability to "learn" was due to the teachers, my parents, and me. ... not "the system." If a student can't read after four years in high school, who were his English/reading teachers? Sadly, too, parents from low performing students don't help their kids, too. What ever method is used to evaluate how a student is doing, if teachers continue to pass students that shouldn't be passed, it'll be the same thing all over again. When I went to UOG, it was disconcerting that college kids who took four years of math in high school still didn't know how to do high school math. ...am not sure why teachers seem to be afraid to hold back non-performing students.

Test scores are a part of the system to gauge the effectiveness of the whole learning process it does provide predictive validity. These are the area of weaknesses the students and teachers have to work on. So let's get to it and sharpen the students skills as best the school can make it.

GovGo had to rig the true picture of extremely low test score to make it appear better than it is. GovGu can't continue to support Education as evidenced by under par budget release from DOA, and a school bus system that's deficient? OOG is where a support function (bus system) dictates the operation (school bell schedule) due to its inept management.

I would be more confident in the improvements if they would not have changed the test to make the scores look better.

  • What are the scores - 8 years ago

The survey would be more valid if you would provide detail about the scores. Are we supposed to guess?

Standardized Test Scores are rigged. They are based on creating a curve, so scores are given by percentile ranking. This is not the same as percentage. The two are very different. It is impossible to obtain the actual percentage scores (how many questions the students got right). I am very concerned about the quality of education in Guam Schools. However since Standardized Test Scores are a complete racket by the rip-off text-book companies, I am not concerned about the Standardized Test Scores.
