Angela Williams (1988) certainly should have been considered. Varsity captain 1987 and 1988...6-foot middle who led team's hitting, blocking and passing stats. She was team's MVP twice. All-Big 8 (now SMAC) twice during a period of dominated by Portage Northern. At Spring Arbor University had nearly 1,800 kills and 1,200 digs...1st 1,000-1,000 at SAU. Top 10 NIAA and NCCAA hitter in 1990, 1991. NCCAA All-American in 1991. NCCAA 1991 National Tournament MVP where SAU finished 3rd...assistant coach with Bill Minter for SAU NCCAA national championship team Coached Springport High School 1988-1995 her teams winning 5 district titles...has been St. Philip's #1 asst. 13 seasons...like Vicky Groat has over 1,000 wins at varsity level along with 10 state titles, two runnersups. BCC coach Pierce Roberts is deceased but would agree with college coach Stan Gibbs "Ang was special, the best I ever coached...a leader on the court and off the court...always giving you 100 percent. A dominant player who could run the net positions and play back row."
Bumped into Stan last Saturday. I'm Ang's step-father but my volleyball knowledge in Battle Creek goes all the way back to Mick Haley's early 1970's venture with 3 St. Philip students on the Komet's junior team and where that has led to over 2,000 wins, 20 state titles at St. Philip.
