No doubt HIMSS has long ago lost its way. If they were truly member driven (as HMS and AHA-HIS group were decades ago) they would have set up a division and conference to teach members how to negotiate with vendors and garner strong performance contracts. But alas, their is little or no revenue in that.

Health IT Marketing & Communications is a VERY niche specialty, requiring a unique combination of interdisciplinary expertise. From that perspective, I think a conference focused on this category of professionals makes a lot of sense. So much sense in fact, that John Lynn and Shahid Shah, 2 well know thought leaders in the space, launched the Healthcare IT Marketing and Communications Conference (#HITMC) four years ago! Since the launch of #HITMC,a vibrant community has grown up among attendees, supported both by smaller regional "Meetups", as well as regularly scheduled Twitter chats. Most of the people who participate are ALSO active HIMSS members and Annual Trade Show attendees. I would hate to see this great and growing event and group be damaged in any way as a result of competition from the 1800 lb HIT gorilla!

Vendors already offer time for individualized sessions to those who show an interest. Being sponsored by the conference would just be another avenue for the "big" organizations to obtain more attention and the conference to get more revenue.

Isn't that what current state and national himss conferences is intended for - Getting vendors to sell to providers?
