Should the City of Phoenix spend roughly $50,000 on a third-party investigation into the Phoenix PD’s handling of protesters after Trump's Aug. 22 rally?

No, they shouldn't spend that kind of money for that. I think the police did their job and that money should go to a needed cause such as helping those in Texas.

Frankly I think that there should have been more arrests at night I think the crowd had gotten way out of control and I think that the police were very slow to respond

These protestors are the same idiots that ran up the litigation bill on sheriff joe !!!!! Now they are starting on our PD, WHAT SAY YOU NOW ?????????????????

These protesters scream about their rights while depriving others of theirs. If they want an investigation, than let them pay for it. Don't burden the innocent tax payers.
The police were justified for their actions as numerous videos reveal.
I would have gone to the Trump rally, had I known there would be a strong & professional police presence.
Thx. Gov. Ducey & all hero police officers.

  • Ruth Lillivk - 7 years ago

I would say yes to this but only to show that the police did their job and to shut the protesters up

  • Ruth Lillivk - 7 years ago

I feel the officers did their job. What the bad protesters did were wring and if they didn't throw things to officers then officers would have retaliate. As people said the protesters left but a few just had to cause trouble and now they want to tell police they were wrong. How many of these people were illegal I wonder.

This is ludicrous. The Phoenix police did an excellent job. Keep up the good work! I'm proud of you Phoenix!
Thank you for keeping the President safe, and keeping Phoenix Arizona safe. #MAGA!

  • Laura Walls - 7 years ago

Quite frankly I think these people should have all been shot! P

Congratulations PPD did their job... Thank you we were not a another national news riot and our president remained safe...

The police had a job to do, keep the peace. The protesters came with one agenda, to create havoc. Peaceful demonstrators do not throw rocks or water bottles and any projectile at anyone at anytime. The response they received was warranted as their actions were offensive and criminal. Don't want to get treated like a criminal don't commit a crime. Pretty simple. I praise the Phoenix Police Depsttment for showing great restraint. This was a heated and violence intended event to confront the honest hardworking men and women who were showing their support of the elected Head of the Country. Don't like it get a viable candidate and make you vote count. I for one will not be bullied by those who think violence will make me see things their way.

  • Robert T Walp - 7 years ago

I was there I feel the police were justified in what they did, the people on tv who said there was no provocation must be biased against the police and didn't watch the news. When people throw rocks, bottles etc at the police then what do you expect the same for anybody who was standing next to them they could of left instead of making the situation worse. Get a clue the police did their job

I would have liked the investigation to continue to clear, most likely, the officers. Maricopa County already took a big financial hit for paying for Arpaio's activities. I don't live in Phx or Maricopa County, but when something smells fishy, investigate the reason for the odor. I totally support our Officers in Coconino County. I don't think the feeling is the same for Maricopa County! Something smelled bad and it was bad!

People hold one group or another to a standard they violate themselves
This is becoming the norm across the country to protest and assume the right to violate restrictions and laws and then blame others for there infractions.
We all have freedom of speech, but not the right to turn to violence to others and call it free speech.
You reap what you sew.....taxpayers should not bear the price for there actions.

  • Jeanette Dibble - 7 years ago

When the people you are protesting have left quietly and you continue to hang around, you are looking for trouble. I stayed up and watched people deliberately defy the police, block the streets, throw things, and disregard an order. The protest was over the police had to clear the. Streets for traffic and people were ignoring them. What if they had left and. Something had happened, the same people complaining would have blamed them for leaving too early. There was no other reason to hang around other then to now defy police. Even after they were letting off the gas cans people still didn't leave. I think the police did exactly what we pay them to do.

  • Debbie - 7 years ago

Police did what they needed to do. I agree with what everyone else said, except I wouldn't participate in a 'go fund me' to investigate our police. For what? Totally agree with Joy. Descent folks stay home instead of being out there causing trouble, especially against our President. You have to wonder how many of those protesters were legal Americans. NO WAY should we put out money for an outside investigation! If the money was coming out of each council member's pocket I know there wouldn't be an issue.

  • B. Race - 7 years ago

Trumpilthinskin did such a fine job of getting his minions all worked up with his incendiary comments I'm surprised there wasn't more trouble, but from what I could see the police reaction was way more aggressive than the threat to them! Reminded me of how the Ohio National Guard responded to kids throwing rocks at Kent State. Those Guardsmen were agitated by having to wear gasmasks and heavy riot gear in the heat ...I believe the Phoenix police reacted in much the same way....too much force!

  • Barbara Daniels - 7 years ago

It is no surprise that protestors believe the police over reacted. If they would have dispersed as directed there would have been no problem.. I thought the Phoenix Police were very retrained in their reaction. No serious damage or injuries is a great outcome!

  • Dean - 7 years ago

If the gun wasn't operational why was it loaded. Nobody was shot,no cars were ran into the protesters, only protesters throwing rocks and cans filled with cement Thanks Phoenix police for the job you did.

  • Linda K - 7 years ago

I have no problem with the Phoenix Police being ready for the worst, as they did outside the Trump event. There were some who were injured and not all of them were protesting. But when you go to an event that has the distinct possibility to turn violent, how do you have the right to complain about how the police handle things?
I want police ready to protect the community at all times. When there is a serious threat of violence, I want them ready to meet it. We have seen the cities where they were not pro-active about violence and as a result there are more hurt and more property is destroyed. That didn't happen in Phoenix!
Thank you, Phoenix Police, for being ready!

When are people (protestors) going to wise up and realize there are consequences for their actions? Police officers are on the DEFENSE with these people.. react when they have to. They don't just wait for a lull and attack.. come on, counsel, stand up for our people in blue for a change! Too many of these protestors turn into nothing more than mob criminals that think it's their right to throw things at our officers. That one man found out the hard way what happens when you lob a smoke bomb at an officer and he deserved it big time... I hope he learned his lesson, but I doubt it.

Please, for the love of God, stop giving that Maupin person a platform to spread his hate! If nobody ever stuck a microphone in his face, we wouldn't have to listen to him and his hate. If he actually is a minister, I'm guessing he got it online and it had nothing to do with God. He does nothing but get his followers riled up and wanting to riot.

  • Jon Adamson - 7 years ago

Interesting that some here say braking the "law" should have consequences? That only applies to exersizing your first amendment rights? You can ignore any other law and get "pardoned" if you are a friend of "Mr Trump". Then break any law you want because you are on "our side" of the disagreement! SAD....and SICK!....

  • Karen Phillips - 7 years ago

If the Phoenix City Council allows these demonstrators/protestors to bully them into an investigation of the Phoenix Police Department in attempts to validate their actions, the City Council should resign. The individuals who spoke in favor of an investigation were typical of their actions on the street. They chant, they yell, anything to disrupt and disallow a differing point of view. Phoenix Police Department did an excellent job of maintaining control of the situation after President Trumps appearance. AZ was not to be ridiculed for inaction as occured in past demonstrations/riots held in Charlottesville and Berkeley and numerous other cities in this nation who are under threat of Antifa and other protests which subsequently turn into riots. Bravo to the Phoenix Police Department.

  • SNDY - 7 years ago

The police did what they thought they needed to do in order to keep the protest from getting worse. Shame on those who came prepared to escalate the protest. Many had masks and water to wash their eyes. If they were not expecting problems why did they bring these items. So many people saying they had no warning....really did they warn the police.
no matter what happens it is always someone other than themselves fault. If they continue to not allow the city council to hear and vote on the hiring of an outside company to investigate the issue that to me means they just don't think it is needed. If you want your protest to be heard you need to show respect of other. Your opinion is not the only one that is right. Find some level grounds. More needed to be arrested.

  • Deborah Cassidy - 7 years ago

Thank you Tracy McMillan for your great comments! People need to learn to respect law enforcement. They dont hesitate to call them when they are in need of them but resist when they are rebelling against them. we need to set the example that WE SUPPORT OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT!!!

  • Keith Oliver - 7 years ago

Police responded AFTER the bottles & rocks were thrown at the PPD. BUT not until the "protesters" were warned. Maupin is a pawn & a nobody. He needs to apologize to Chief Williams for the racial slur he called her. Yes Maupin is AA just as the Chief but it was still a racial based slur he called her. He's disgusting & irrelevant.

  • Tracy McMillan - 7 years ago

Police did the job they're hired to do. People need to realize when you break the law or jeopardize the publics safety there are consequences. AND the city counsel needs to back their law enforcement! By bowing down to these protestors as by agreeing to pay $50,000.00 for an outside investigation, you send the message that the police may have done something wrong. THIS NEEDS TO STOP. OUR POLICE HAVE A TOUGH ENOUGH JOB IN THIS DAY AND AGE. BUT TO DO IT WITHOUT HAVE THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE COMMUNITY BACKING THEM UP IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG WRONG WRONG!
OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND AND ACCEPT THE REALITY OF OUR PRESIDENT AND WHO IT IS. QUIT ACTING LIKE SPOILED 2 YEAR OLDS THAT THINK IF THEY THROW A BIG ENOUGH TANTRUM THEY'LL GET THEIR WAY.

I APPLAUD OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

  • Robert Casey - 7 years ago

I am sick & tired of all these f'ing protests! I am glad that guy was charged with assult on a police officer. All these people protesting for Sherrif Joe to be punished for violating the law are contradicting themselves whem they complain he was arresting illegals who were breaking the immigration laws of this country. Isnt all of these people fighting against the United States of America upholding our immigration laws guilty of Treason against the United States of America? It is an insult of all the people who have immigrated here legally. My ancestors were shipped back to their country of origin if they were not in good health and had some coin in their pocket! I am tired of all thede people breaking our laws & bitching that we wamt to uphold our laws. I not racist one bit, but if there is only one race screaming discrimination that sums it up right there. Its NOT discrimination, its people tired of having people from another country demand my tax dollars support them. Not to mention all the identity theft. Other countries dont put up with this crap!

If you go to a rally or protest aren't you supposed to do it peacefully. If you're bringing a gas mask, you're expecting trouble. And if you go and see trouble brewing, why wouldn't you just leave! The police were doing their job! I believe some protesters are inspired or even paid to drum up trouble. Leave the man alone and let Trump do the job he was voted in to do! Protesters got out of hand and why should we waste $50,000. Money better spent somewhere else.send it to the flood victims!

  • S. Pike - 7 years ago

No, the Police acted accordingly. However, it would be nice to know and investigate who and why masked violent people were allowed on our streets and why the Mayor and new organizations pandered to the violent ones. Get it together Mayor Stanton or I will take my tax dollar elsewhere.

  • Pete - 7 years ago

The Police did a very good job, several protesters were throwing things at them and they are the people that started this, not the Police.

  • lauren hylen - 7 years ago

    Police were awesome!

  • Robert Voigt - 7 years ago

No need to investigate!!! The police did a terrific job at dispersing the anti-Trump protestors. They were told numerous times to leave. And then they started throwing objects at the police so they responded appropriately. They didn't just start shooting tear gas and other NON-LETHAL objects at protestors until they became unruly. SO, I GIVE THE POLICE A BIG HIGH FIVE FOR A TREMENDOUS JOB THEY DID AT NOT LETTING THE SITUATION GET OUT OF HAND!!!!

  • Terry Hester - 7 years ago

Realy they want to protest about are commander and chief ,just look how they acted at the meeting today that says it all,I am shear most are undocumented ,for one they dont have the right to asimble there was nothing done wrong they cry about every thing if not try to sue right.

  • B Chylak - 7 years ago

Not just no, but he'll no. The hand full of protestors are given way to much attention. Attention is fuel for there unruliness.

  • deb - 7 years ago

Could the people start a 'go fund me' account and pay for the third party investigation ?
I would send some money if a' go fund me ' account is started.

  • Robert Paetkae - 7 years ago

The police did a great job! Need to support our police!

  • Jeanne Rogers - 7 years ago

The police did an outstanding professional job. I was so proud of them. There should be an honor banquet held for them.

  • Annita Boynton - 7 years ago

Absolutely not. How much do the police need to be threatened or the surrounding community before they're justified in deplying non lethal force? Phoenix Police did an amazing job. Those who question their use of foce should put the uniform, riot gear and gas masks and try to do that job and handle an unruly disruptive group of people. Thank you to Phoenix Polce for all they do!!!!

  • Joy Soldi - 7 years ago

The only people who believe the police action was wrong are the ones who are always out there causing trouble. If you don't want trouble, stay home in your homes like decent folks do. No one on either side should be out at anytime in a big city picketing for anything in these days of trouble. The police haven't been tough enough for a long time, and these people on the streets know they can get away with anything. I applaud the Phoenix Police taking charge while they still could., and protecting the other people there who were leaving the rally to go home.

  • Charlotte Clark - 7 years ago

Please allow our Police Department to do their job. Review the videos of this situation wirhout incurring unnecessary expense.

  • Joan Coyne - 7 years ago

The police did a great job in containing this rally and preventing major harm or death to anyone. If those people want an investigation then let them pay for it. We taxpayers should not have to shoulder the burden. The Phoenix Police were great.

  • Janice Klippert - 7 years ago

The police did what their job is, you are going to make these people happy no matter what you do

  • Gary - 7 years ago

For every action there is a reaction!! Police reacted correctly!
