Responding to Greg Park about why I took the contrarian view and voted Yes. Two points:

    1. Medical care is not free. Someone has to pay for it. Under Obamacare, the government makes it so that you basically have no excuse not to buy health insurance (and it was compulsory up until last year). Insurance isn't perfect but it shields you from the full price of the most expensive services. If you think of yourself as indestructible and want to take your chances without insurance, you should be prepared to take personal financial responsibility, including bankruptcy, when that short-sighted plan falls through.

    2. Let's say a doctor/hospital saves your life with a treatment that costs a million dollars. Is your life worth a million dollars to you? Doesn't the health system deserve a portion of your life's income to compensate you for giving you your life back in the first place? I think that's completely fair. Chapter 13 Bankruptcy actually means you go before a judge and figure out how to pay off your debts with a repayment plan, if possible. I see this as the fulfillment of that scenario.

A medical event(s) forcing someone into bankruptcy by itself, that is an easy NO! However, let's look at the big picture where its CC debt, wanting that new car every couple of years, charging meals and new clothes and then BAM the unexpected medical event comes along and pushes them over the edge. I don't know the answer but so many of these people simply don't manage their day to day lives and then they have a health crisis and I don't know how to help this group. Hopefully people are looking into charity and financial assistance as most hospitals have them and they can be quite generous.

Is this a real question? I would be very interested in hearing the rationale of those who responded "Yes". What would also be interesting is to know which industries these people represent.

Medical Bankruptcy is an abomination, especially when you consider that several industries are receiving serious cabbage by forcing others into slavery (debt).

When will our industry embrace a single payer Medicare for All structure. I would love to hear the musings of others in this industry on why they think it is a bad idea. Also make sure to note on what side of the equation they exist. I would surely take the opinion of someone representing the current breed of middle-men with more than just a grain of salt.

Medical Bankruptcy happens because of a profit-driven system that preys on the less-insured, even worst for the non-insured.
