David, when you say "owns" do you mean "controls", "takes responsibility for coordinating the implementation of", "advocates for the use of" or something else? I think clarifying that point will be helpful. (I've never worked in a for-profit corporation in any real way, so I don't have direct experience to comment on your dialog with Steve. But it seems to me that this definition is at the heart of the discussion at the moment.

Steve-your comment is true in the larger picture. But, in a corporation, someone has to step up and allow the company to unfold, shepherding legal, marketing, customer service and all sorts of other groups. My question is general, but is meant to be from a corporate perspective. No matter what, corporations still have org charts. The challenge I am living is to separate the org chart from the people with any interest in the company at all.

This question "Who Owns Social Media" with 5 choices from an org chart belies a corporate-centric mindset that doesn't reflect reality. I own social media, you own social media. It emerges from people, not some branch of the org chart. Any company that is framing its relationship with social media as "ownership" has already failed.
