Microsoft have a free version of Visual Basic, I hope that Apple one day releases a free version of XCode. I would agree with being able to learn new skills on the free version, so you can develop apps for personal use. Then if you get good/develop a good app with potential, pay the fee to have it listed in the store. If its good you will more than get back your investment!
As a learning developer, I would love that. Also, less nazi'ing of the App Store!
I have been holding out for a Verizon iPhone, but I'm interested in all the folks here who say they prefer Android phones.
I'm sure all the apple drones out there are foaming at the mouth to find out what Steve Jobs is going to allow them to do with their next toy!
No doubt the iPhone has had a massive impact on the mobile phone manufacturers of the world. Have to say though, their treatment of developers does seem to be at worst suspect and at best downright ridonkulous.
Customisation isn't everything though. As a Computer Science undergrad, I would like to develop for the iPhone at some point, but wouldnt want to pay £60 for the privilege. But I think at that price, I would be motivated to get something on the app store, rather than just messing around.
I do think closing the iPhone OS does hinder some development. But to be fair, how many people buy a Jaguar, rip open the bonnet and try and mess with the engine and the interior. You just leave it and enjoy it.
People dont complain that Facebook is closed source with APIs, just like iPhone OS! My experience with all smart phones prior to iPhone was terrible. Now look at EVERY smart phone, centred on an App store and icons on a grid layout with a bottom dock.
Meh, I cant be bothred to argue for Apple any more. I have my reasons for liking the products, they may be expensive, but so are Charles Tyrwhitt shirts, and they are comfortable and worth every bloody penny!
I always thought there wasn't too much difference between android and iphone os but android moves much faster and the customisation & openess makes android much more rewarding and the community for the first gen phones is wonderful
Adam, interesting to hear that you're sticking with Apple because of the apps you've already paid for -- is this a sticking point for anyone else? Any Android fans out there too devoted to their app collection to make the switch?

I've been the first in line for the past two years to buy the latest iPhone but no more. I've grown tired of the boring UI with its jarring application experience. I'm also frustrated with Apple's closed ecosystem & controlling dictatorship.
Google Android is where the future of mobile platforms lies & as soon as my contract is up, I'm signing up for a HTC Desire.
I am always interested in what the guys at apple can come up with, but i must say, i prefer android to any iPhone. I think they are just fashion accessories these days, Apple could put the price up to 2 grand and people would still queue around the block to get one

I need a new iPhone. I have a 3G that's out of its 18 month contract, now running on O2 1 month simplicity until the new one is released. I was considering an android based handset, but I have paid a reasonable amount of money for my Apps, which cant be used anywhere else.
I know iPhones aren't as technically advanced as some handsets (camera for example), but you get only really what's needed and they are built well and the Apple Store support I've found is excellent.
