What is the risk of patients with varicose veins developing DVT /Pulmonary embolism ?
Risk is real and definite.
The risk is very low rather negligible .Need not create fear and shouldn't create false alarm
It depends upon the extent of varicose veins and potential for infection.
Even if the varicose veins get thrombosed , dissemination to deeper venous planes are largely prevented by the muscle mass effect on the perforating small venous channels.
I don't know the real answer .I will ask my colleague vascular surgeon !
