As a former member of the RCMP I find the entire argument insulting. There are more RCMP killed per year than members of the Military. Members of the RCMP tours last years, not 6 months at a time. They fight physically, are shot at, and risk their lives every shift they serve. I agree the military deserve their own plates, but the RCMP have been serving Canada longer than the DND. The RCMP are Veterans and they should have their own plate. Both services are proud of their selfless service and both deserve that recognition. I do not understand how this can even be a debate. The Government should issue seperate plates for both branches, why is that a problem?

As someone who has a family member serving in the regular forces for the CAF, I wholeheartedly believe that those in this line of duty, alongside the Navy and the Air Force, should be allowed to have these plates, and only after they have been honourably discharged.
No other law enforcement agent, past or present, as well as those who have served in commonwealth or overseas regular forces should be eligible, as they did not serve under this banner (Canada) in particular.

What is a Veteran? Is it one who serves overseas? I live in a CFB air force base community and am proud of them. But having said that I know that only a fraction of them have served out of country, and only a fraction of them that did are in harms way. Are they Vets? Yes. Now look at the RCMP. During the Great War they formed the first PROVO Core ( now considered the MP'S) and fought on the lines. Also they are the oldest still serving regiment in Canada. They go on just about every UN mission deployed over seas. Two RCMP members were killed on UN mission in the Haiti earthquake. The Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP both are ordered and deployed anyway in Canada and on missions overseas. The federal government recognizes this. What about the Merchant Marines, are you too going to say they should not get this plate? They too are part of the Canadian Vets and legions. So if you are creating a plate for retired vets, they all need to be included. If not the you need separate plates for retired Canadian Forces Members, Retired RCMP etc. My thoughts keep it simple, if you are considered a Vet under federal legislation, you get the plate!

Absolutely not. Veterans plates should be reserved expressly for veterans. If cops what a specialty plate then create one for them. Two completely different forms of service in my opinion, if you can call law enforcement a form of serving the country. Veterans and law enforcement are held in much different regard in my experience.

So RCMP should get veterans plates because some have died in the line of duty . So have City Police ,Fire and Emergency Health Personnel Do they get veterans plates also? Any one who has served overseas or is in the Canadian Armed Forces should get there veteran plates No one else is entitled

I am a retired serviceman with Veterans Plates. Vernon BC does offer free parking downtown but trust me it is NOT why I have them. In my Peer support group (I suffer from PTSD) there are more RCMP (serving and retired) than military guys. They should be recognized as well, but if you ask them most would be embarrassed to put a Veterans plate on their vehicle. We get along great and we can not understand why the Legion is spear heading this along with the BC government ??? I winter in Arizona where that state has over 50 different types of personalized AZ plates. I've always wondered why ICBC never explored this, recognizing particular groups IE: RCMP, First Responders, Handicap plates, Rotary, BCSPCA and even sport clubs BC Lions, Canucks . Ham radio operators are allowed their own plates. What a cash cow that could become. People are currently paying an extra $50 initial fee and $40 renewal for BC Parks plates now. I still spot the odd winter Olympic plate now and then. Leave the Veteran plates to military veterans and let's push to have particular group recognised through ICBC.

As a Veteran, I think that the Vet Plates be reserved for ex-Military personnel (Regular Force/ Reserves)...The Federal\ Provincial governments should come up with separate plates for First Responders :( Police/Fire/Ambulance). I wish that the current Vet Plates could somehow list your Branch of Service (Navy/ Army/ Air Force). The only reason that the Legion is allowing RCMP into their branches as members is due to the declining numbers of Veterans (Military), so they are losing a lot of money from a lack of dues from its membership. I am a Aboriginal Veteran (I know not really PC, think I am to call myself Indigenous??), I come from a long line of Military Veterans, from both my Dad's and Mom's families, not to mention my aboriginal roots, where we Natives (not PC I know), have stood up to protect this Beautiful Country, as far back as the War of 1812, and not to mention going beyond the borders to ensure others have the same privileges and / or rights as we Canadians have. When I signed up for Military service, it was for God, Queen and Country and that with a moment’s notice I may have to give my life for those three reasons and my Canadian values. We Military members have made countless sacrifices, being away from family for training and deployments, to where some of us have not come home from many battlefields. My Veteran Plates not only show my pride for my service to this Country but also Honor those before me and their Sacrifices, and those who paid the ultimate price for freedom (like a few of my family members have done in WWI and WWII).

If it is granted to all RCMP, what about all the others from different police services, fire, ambulance? What would be next, cadet service?

I’m a retired RCMP officer and I do not think it’s right for RCMP to get these plates. They are for war veterans only and should not even be given to RCMP that have served overseas either. Period. RCMP service overseas is much safer and different than for the military. Completely different category. Just my thoughts. If I had the plates, I would feel like I had stolen service from the true war veterans. They are the true hero’s

Absolutely they should not be entitled to veterans plates. Moreover, do not kid yourself with the RCMP service overseas. When we were way way beyond the wire, in all of seven months there, we had one old guy RCMP officer come visit our outpost for a maximum of two hours. I don't think he even did anything. He definitely wasn't patrolling the villages with us on foot, ever.

I have all the respect for all professions that serve the public. The word veteran is defined as a person who has had long experience in a particular field. Theoretically it can be used to described any retired member of any profession. In this case the veterans plate is recognition for who we are and what we have done with respect to military service to our country. The military profession is the only profession that accepts unlimited liability and that is something that I feel the majority of the public is unaware of or even understands. After almost 30 years of service I shouldn’t have to explain that I am a retired military veteran that has served in conflict to protect my country. When people see the veterans plate it should alway pay homage to our fallen soldiers, to those who still struggle day to day, to those that volunteered to put their lives in harms way,
I was a little embarrassed when I saw this report on the news tonight and they referred to the plate as it doesn’t give you anything other than maybe free parking. I have to disagree...it gives me pride, I could care less about parking.
I think retired members of the public service should have a plate in recognition for their long and dedicated service that reflects who they are as I’m sure they are just as proud of their service as I am of mine.

I think they should have a separate plate for the RCMP... they should be recognized but not as veterans... veterans plates should be for veterans that served in the military, they have fought in wars for our rights and that should not be changed

They do go through a lot and are criticised from both sides. I cannot imagine going through what they do.
The Military Veteran plate should be exclusive to Military ONLY. Overseas deployment (away from family and friends) is significantly different than going home every night to the comfort of your family, home and bed.

So I get it, only people who protect people in other countries are veterans, and the hell with domestic issues?
It doesn't matter it's just another way to ignore the front line people here in you town, city or neighborhood.. I can only say that anyone considering a career in law enforcement should really rethink their position and if they are serious about protecting their country here, they should do it with no expectation of recognition.
I can't think of one Armed Forces veterans would have an issue with this.

Keith, RCMP/police have served the public, in armed conflict and other dangerous situations and many have been killed in the line of duty. Having served 25 years and dealing with the aftermath of witnessing death, suicides fatal accidents and too many atrocities to mention. To even ask the question whether they should be recognized is an insult to all of those who had to deal with domestic crime, violence and conflicts. Seeing that more people think the police can't get a 'special' licence plate is disheartening and downright insulting.

I said no but if the RCMP member had been deployed with the DND overseas on missions example Afghanistan that persons should be able to put an application with prove he was attached with the Military for a tour of duty.
