I thought making pot legal meant people wouldnt get a criminal record and ease up constipation of courts.
But now I see this a pot smokers wanting to smoke in public the same as cigarette smokers.
Pot is a drug, YES or NO? Does it affect peoples driving or cognitive skills like alcohol? YES.
I see nothing here but another tax grab from the government, and no concern for taxpayers.
People who work and pay taxes are the ones who have to stay healthy and most of us hate smoke...
from cigarettes, diesel trucks, and those god awful loud harley bikes I dont know why police dont shut them down unless they are afraid of backlash... dont get me started on those bright HID headlights which blind me. I am a professional driver, and I dont smoke, it gives me a headache. And I was overjoyed to hear that there would be no smoking ten meters from bus stops because people see the bus coming but have to take that last drag until the bus door opens, and if the driver waits for them to exhale they get upset and start pounding on the door and swear at the driver. And when the bus pulls up to a transit center, the first thing smokers do is come up to the door with their lit coffin nail to ask how long the bus will be sitting there so they can finish their selfish smoke and meanwhile the smoke comes in the door and windows and is hard to get rid of, enough that smokers clothes and hair and breath and lungs reek of the tar...
I seriously do hope council will not bow to the few and outlaw christmas trees from the airport like in vancouver because of a few being offended of our beautiful country, not like when we go visit we ask anyone to tear down a temple or something, it is all about respect...
And pot, nicotine and alcohol are all drugs, and the government just wants more taxes from us all, and yes, smokers are short term thinkers who dont care and even smoke around their babies in their strollers and I ask them not to and get dirty looks...
Drugs affect society, do them at home where you are not liable to get angry, want to fight like outside bars, and drive and kill and injure people. The cost to society is far too great when you consider medical costs, and police time, and insurance claims.
Please council, if you back down of smoking outside doors of bars, PLEASE do not continue to allow people to smoke pot or cigarettes or drink at bus stops as it is not a right, it is a privilege, and when your habit affects the health of others and many are allergic but weak and elderly and cannot take on selfish smokers in their condition, and people need to start respecting others in this city. Yes, you can drink bottled water, but to slosh your drink on others is offensive, pop is sticky, coffee is hot... Play in the sandbox like an adult, not a spoiled kid who needs to test every border and line and law and push law abiding tax paying working people to the limit because our taxes pay your AISH cheques with which you buy those coffin nails and pot with...
I do believe this goes much deeper than the superficial climate we are exposed to, if the primeminister of Canada endorses pot smoking in public because people do it, what is next? Taking a pee or dump in public? How about sex? Some things should be done at home like injecting your drugs and changing your diapers and not leaving sunflower or pistachio seeds on the buses for others to slip on...
I really do hope city council agrees with Edmontonians who DO NOT SMOKE and force the people who want to share their cancer and carcinogins with others and purposely blow them in others faces... If I am going down, so should you you long term thinker... There is medication for pain already out there, cheaper than pot, and longer lasting. Medical pot is a sore excuse, and please do your medicating at home out of sight and mind of youth and impressionables and those who wish to remain healthy and who are allergic and get headaches which last for hours. Vapes smell great, I dont mind them at all... PLEASE

I am continually amazed by how hard our Mayor and City Counsel make things. It is like personal preferences
are dictating the direction of the city - without much thought or looking at the long term.

This issue is a not complicated. As others have said - treat cannabis the same way as enforcement of alcohol.
For seniors who grew up with tobacco this is a nightmare. Condo boards outlawing smoking at home - counsel outlawing it on the streets - and parks - what next. No more rock or folk festivals .

Make Cannabis the Same as what laws are in effect as alcohol . You cant walk down the street with a drink in your hand or drink in public places . Why even try to group it with cigarettes , Alcohol and Cannabis should be no different . Laws should be the same .

If it was up to Edmontonians as a whole, smoking would be banned everywhere. Even though so many people consume cannabis in this city, most are already doing it out of sight and out of mind of most people beyond the smell wafting a block over. You should ban burning fires in backyards too if you don't want people to be negatively effected by smoke. The smell is many times stronger. Or no more cooking curry in apartments since the smell offends some people. You know or having basically no consideration for your fellow citizens because of the lives they choose to live. I'll see you all on whyte with my medical cannabis in a joint and police can't do squat.

I agree it should have the same restrictions as alcohol. If not, there should be added restrictions to smoking in vehicles where children are present.

There definitely needs to be regulation on this. I agree with away from parks where children may be present. But if marijuana smoking is banned when one is walking down the street then I'd hope it would be the same for cigarettes. When I smoked I was always mindful enough to be away from anyone, because, as a non smoker now, it fricken stinks!

I do agree with there being the same rules as with alcohol, as I believe it relates more to that than cigarettes as there is the impairment factor. I wish common sense and respect was more common, then maybe there wouldnt be a need for so many rules.

Smoking is a disgusting habit. The tougher the restrictions the better.
Terrible how smokers just drop their butts with no consideration to littering.
Walk a beautiful golf course like Victoria in the valley and the tees are littered with butts - disgusting.
Not all but many smokers have no respect for non-smokers so only way is to regulate.
We also need enforcement with stiff fines

Enough rules already. City is becoming more unfriendly all the time. Will not attend any city functions as I don't know how many laws I will be breaking. Too uncomfortable.

Why vaping? Studies have shown about how harmful it is and I don't think that it should be out into the same category as smoking cigarettes. I quit smoking by vaping and I think this is ridiculous

Marijuana like alcohol should not be consumed in public places unless designated for such use. Same laws as alcohol use.

There is suppose to be a distance that smokers need to be away from doorways and that isn't enforced as many times with my kids I have to walk thru smoke to get into places. Even without my kids I don't want to walk thru someone blowing smoke at me and have me stinking like smoke or inhaling the second hand smoke. There is a reason I don't smoke,be it cigarettes or other and I don't need to wade thru people who have no regard for others because they are lazy and cant walk further away from doorways. My question would be what ever the decision is how will this be inforced?
