Android 9 is CRAP! Obviously very poorly tested prior to rollout, if at all.
I have two Pixel XL's in my family, mine and my wifes:
Problems so far:
* Battery is completely dead by early afternoon, even with light usage. Also there's now no warning like before when the screen boundaries would turn red/orange.
* WIFI doesn't work. It stays in a continuous loop trying to connect, retrying, etc.
* Several critical to us apps no longer work and crash immediately upon launching, including the interface app to our pharmacy that we need to be able to order prescription refills.
Nice job Google - NOT!

2 weeks in and still no improvement here, my battery is dead by noon every day. No fix in sight?
Chris L - 6 years ago
I updated my Pixel 2 XL to 9 last week and immediately saw a drop in battery performance. Unfortunately it only seems to be getting worse. I have to charge my phone multiple time a day now. It used to be when I went to bed, unless it was under heavy usage or something.
Jessica Harris - 6 years ago
I always have my phone on battery saver. Without it, my battery drains. After the recent update to Android pie, my battery has been draining like crazy. It's as though my phone isn't even set to battery saver. Can I just go back to Oreo? I play a ton of games on my phone and my battery just drains too quickly.

My battery(Pixel original) went from 100% to 23% with NO usage in under 8 hours while I slept.
Jami - 6 years ago
My Pixel (original) is not only barely charging, it's super hot and my battery went from 100% to 20% after one hour on FB! I used to be able to charge once during the day and overnight. I hardly have any apps and have checked everything for battery usage. It has to be Pie. I stopped using the battery optimizer and it's a little bit better without it. I hope they have a fix soon! Just the 3 mins typing this took 7% battery life! Help!!

Pixel XL - battery life is much worse, needs to be fixed or I need to go back to Oreo
Christine - 6 years ago
Pixel 2, battery is definitely worse since the update. Yesterday my phone went from 50% to 18% in 8 hours with normal use; no streaming, used instagram, FB, and chrome a handful of times and pocketcasts for about 30 minutes. Nothing different than before when a full charge would last me 2 days or more. This morning I woke up and my battery dropped from 47% to 23% overnight :/
sheast - 6 years ago
Although it's slightly worse for me, I've only had it for 2 days and it has slightly improved over time and at first it was garbage. Although I am running an Android pie custom rom on a OP2

PixelXL, and battery life has tanked since Pie. What usage used to get me to 12hr before now gets me to maybe 8. Also having the fast charger issue. No new apps or major updates to the ones in the phone.

Battery drains VERY quick. Before 9, I charged every other day. Not happy with drainage.

Pixel 1 owner. Battery life is GARBAGE after update. I used to get all day with normal use, now I'm down to 25-30% remaining BEFORE I even leave for work! I really hope there's a fix for this with the next update. Completely unacceptable to have to charge my phone 3+ times a day
Sid - 6 years ago
After updating this morning, the first thing I have immediately noticed is much less idle battery drain. Standby time has drastically improved. Apart from that it's pretty much the same, as far as I can tell. So, overall it's better.

Pixel 2 here. After the update my subjective feeling (first impressions not backed up by any quantified data) is that my phone's battery, with exactly the same apps (I rarely install apps) and same usage pattern has decreased the performance. Applications I use on a daily basis seem to consume more power than before (Waze is a noticeable case, that was also mentioned by other people here), so it's hard to tell if this is an Android issue or app related. But without question the subjective perception is that it was a change for worse battery-wise. Also an eerie feeling I get when using daily mundane actions, that were natural before, now feel forced in an indescribable way. It seems to me like if the version was released in a rush, an unfinished product.

My battery life has been a hell of a lot better on my essential ph-1...I think the ordeal is that Google was preparing the pie for the pixel 3 and not there previous devices, while essential optimized the pie for the phone that they have right now.
This is why I say bringing out a new phone every year is bad because your not always thinking about getting the phone you have out right now great, and always looking pass it... Shame... So I'm giving essential ph-1 props for sticking with their phone so far, no other company out there is on it like this that I have seen so far

Google Pixel 2 XL, my battery life has changed for better. Even when it gets down to 15%, it seems to somehow squeeze out of it more time than Oreo would. I love it!!

Significant difference for the worse on my Pixel XL 1 Definitely a big drain going on since downloading Pie.

Android 9...???? ! My battery drains way too much. I'm talking about a maximum of 1hr 30min SOC (no battery saver). I'm not sure if this is a software issue, but only 1.5 hrs of SOC until battery is dead, it's not acceptable. Standby times are terrible. Within a 9-10 hr period, battery drains 50%+, even with phone is shut down, which isn't normal. With battery saver on, I get 2 hrs of SOC, usually worst though. This happens on original pixel.
Bruce S Sharp - 6 years ago
Battery life has dropped alot on my pixel original. Also had to disable developers mode. It caused my phone to burn through 1 G data over night, and I was sleeping. Burned through 9 G in 5 days before I figured out what was happening. The last 5 days I have not even used 1 G, and did not change usage habits.

I just got Pie today on my Pixel... Connected it to my charger while updating. Disconnected it after restarting. Went from 100% to 63% in less than 3 hours. I'm beginning to worry that my phone will soon need to be replaced... but with what?!?!? Is there any competition other than iPhone? I feel cornered here. For once, will Google allow users to "try" a new OS version and "roll back" if dissatisfied until bugs are fixed?

This update has been the biggest mistake I have made since getting my pixel 2 xl this January. To make it worse there is no simple way provided by Google to go back to oreo. I'm stuck now trying to learn how to reverse back through sketchy means since the new update is intolerable to me. Not only is battery worse but they removed helpful quick links to alarms, settings, sound settings, screen brightness (need to be at full to see anything outside before only need a quarter full and I have no screen protector). The only cool thing is the always on mode (added weather and battery data) but that info wasn't hard to get before the update.... Please google give an easy reverse for people who want oreo, I switched from Apple to android to do what I want with my phone, you could downgrade on apple... Bs

I used to be able to get home from work after streaming music all day with 25-35% battery left at 8pm. After going to pie my battery is flat dead at 730pm
Sean Mitchell - 6 years ago
Nothing new here you haven't heard from other og pixel XL users. Life after pie is terrible. Only way to stabilize battery drain is in safe mode with the screen off (useless, I know). Minimal usage after 3 hours and I'm at 50% life. Plug it in and forever and a day later (8 hrs or so) it'll be charged back up, that's if you don't use it while it's being charged. Mine struggles to hold steady while I'm using on charge. I was expecting more of a ???? pie instead I got a ???? pie for an update. Heed these words and refrain from updating if you own a pixel XL 1.

Battery life has deteriorated tremendously. So much so that I will go back to Oreo or switch phones altogether. Battery life is one of the things I have enjoyed on my Pixel XL, now with Pie, it sucks!

OG Pixel XL battery drain fast and rapid rate charge with all OEM stock including charger no longer works. 8 plus hours now for a full charge. Unless I am plugged into a charger my phone is worthless.

Much worse battery life than on Beta 4 on an Essential Phone, much worse than Oreo on a Pixel XL

Waze and YouTube are the worst offenders, I made a two hour drive to Portland with Waze running and my Pixel 2 battery went from 100% to 60%.
