How will the closure of RONA stores in Newfoundland impact you?

I voted "It won’t. I don’t shop there" because I live in Renton, WA, USA and I have never been to St. John's, NL, Canada.

A very sad situation for all the employees involved but not at all surprising. Rona, a Quebec based company bought up a bunch of local businesses a few years ago, then sold them to Lowe's, an American based company. Imagine, a Quebec based enterprise making a profit of Newfoundland and Labrador assets!! Never saw that one coming!!

On the other hand, when a business does nothing to upgrade its services, what do you expect. No reflection on the employees whom I always found to be polite and helpful, but have you ever tried to get a price on an article over the telephone at the Bay Roberts store? I am sure you would have an easier time getting through to the Pentagon. The result - you hang up, or you don't even bother next time. On the couple of occasions I complained, I was told that it was an ongoing problem, so there you are.

A very sad situation for the employees to have to face, regardless of the time of year, no matter how you look at it. However we are living in a free market economy where capitalism, which has many good and also some negative qualities, is the accepted system. Businesses take the risk of being in business and this company can chose to operate or not operate these stores for whatever reasons they choose. If there is market demand in the locations they leave, then hopefully another business person will think the risk is worth taking and will decide to open a store there. That is how business works in our democracy and I wouldn't want it any other way.

This store has all newfoundland employees working there and some of these people are older employees and it is going to be very difficult for them to find employment elsewhere. The way that they did this is very distatsefull and a very crushing blow to these people. That is what happens when you have an American company come in and do this dirty deed. We have shopped at this store because we always support our local economy. This is going to further hurt our economy here which is now hanging on by the skin of our teeth. Shame on you Lowes! lets hope our provincial govt. steps in like the quebec govt. did when they tried to do the same there.
