There is a very intriguing book about bookcovers, LOLITA: THE STORY OF A COVER GIRL, edited by John Bertram and Yuri Leving. Nabokov said what he did and did not want in a cover for LOLITA and, for the most part, his wishes have been ignored. But would what he wanted have really been the "best" cover for LOLITA, either artistically or financially? The book shows many covers that have been used and many others designed for a contest but never actually used.
