I say mostly yes, but I think there was probably some underlying anti-Semitism involved because they were an Orthodox Jewish family. Because some hygiene products sold on the market are made with non Halal or non Kosher ingredients, many of the Orthodox Jewish and Muslim people I run into in NYC avoid using them. They will have a strong body odor but I wouldn't call it offensively funky. However, combine that with some people's inherent dislike for Muslims and Jews, they'll make a bigger deal out of the smell.
