Should White Rock levy an additional 5% tax on vacant homes and businesses?

Except, Richard, they also do not support our local economy by having a vacant residential property in this major way:

Those tenants or residents who would otherwise live there would support local business. How much do you estimate the average family spends annually within a community just buying essentials? The loss of that alone far out weighs any burden or demerit on local infrastructure that their habitation would cause. It's not even close.

I support the vacant home and business tax our community cannot support vacant derelict properties both for aesthetic reasons and safety reasons. Vacant homes are sometimes left for years boarded up and continually broken into, fires etc. Businesses especially along our beautiful waterfront need to be active not simply speculative property.

In my previous comment it should have read “...and they are NOT doing anything illegal....
    Thanks

I was under the impression we lived in a free society where the individual also had rights. If someone chooses to buy a house in White Rock -or anywhere in Canada for that matter- why is someone else,ie the government, telling them what they must do with that property! As long as the rights of their neighbors are respected and they are doing anything illegal, it should be no one else’s business. Perhaps they use it as a vacation place or perhaps use it as a place to stay when visiting older relatives or friends in the area. I agree that this type of ‘resident ‘ may not support the local businesses as much, but they also do not utilize local infrastructure (such as roads, sewers etc) or overburden our local resources such as schools and hospitals. The money they put into the community is greater than what they take out.
