When I first saw Nemo, it seemed like minor Pixar, but it has grown on me to become one of their best (which is really saying something). Brokeback, in contrast, seemed "important" at the time, but doesn't quite measure up in retrospect.

This was the first one I came to that hurt—not knife-to-the-heart hurt but my bottom lip definitely quivered when I had to choose one. I went with “brokeback mountain”—the scene where Ennis smells Jack’s shirt DOES hurt my heart every time I even mentally visualize it. I’ve never been sure if my heart hurts for Ennis losing Jack or our losing Heath Ledger and his talent.

I hate this. I hate this. I hate this. Why. No, please. Don't make me choose. Why.

So easy, I screamed in happiness when Crash beat the tragically overrated Brokeback Mountain. I beamed, cried and cheeted in sheer pleasure and delight at Pixar’s glorious underwater beauty.

This is absolutely brutal! I love both of these movies for different reasons. I returned to the theater three times to see Brokeback Mountain when I was in college. Just like the short story, the film is sparse in many ways, reflecting the huge and sometimes empty landscapes of Wyoming. It really is a beautiful film. However, my vote has to go to Finding Nemo -- it elevated the Pixar genre to a new level of excellence in both story telling and digital animation. The voice acting, music, and animation are all exquisite. It is a true gem of the genre and deserves to move forward to Round 2.

Vicious. Just plain vicious.

toughest choice of the first round for me. Going with Nemo because the animation of the escape plan scene thrills me.

Jack, I swear...
Not sure if I'm sadder now voting Ennis and Jack off in the first round than I was during that final scene.
But Nemo was the first film that both my daughters (now 16/13) latched onto and we watched on hard rotation. And my FS avatar is Nemo.
If you can't change it, you gotta stand it.

NNNooooo the pain is too real.

Brokeback all the way. I have a lot of fondness for Nemo, but it's not even the best Pixar film of the decade (hello Up).

This is an incredibly tough call to make. There are several other excellent animated films in the tourney, and I’m not sure Nemo is the best of them. I think the love for Heath Ledger is real and should carry Brokeback out of round 1.
