  • Intellectually I know that Shaun of the Dead runs the risk of fading in the estimation of film history as kind of zeitgeist-capturing moment just ahead of the curve dominated by superhero movies... a cartoony concoction of genres slammed together by a Brit (making the movie fancier, because it's a "foreign film," see) whose grasp on the giddy propulsion of editing montages continues to carry him through the ranks. And Hurt Locker will probably rise in estimation as films about historical conflict usually tend to.

But for now all I can say is that I've watched Hurt Locker once and Shaun more than a dozen times, so I'll risk being on the wrong side of history to help save it.

I enjoy Shaun of the Dead, and I know it's not fair, but I have this weird deep resentment against it for its fanbase and its place in the pantheon of 21st century film. It seems to be a watershed movie for that certain kind of adult nerd caught up in the Aint it Cool/Nerdist/Comic-Con Industrial Complex that rules Hollywood and all of our entertainment lives now 15 years later. That's not solely on Edgar Wright's shoulders, he didn't create the late-capitalist hell that somehow convinced an entire generation of adults to remain in a suspended state of neverending childhood for the infinite consumption opportunities with "loot crates" and re-re-remastered DVD Box Sets. You can't get healthcare or a pension but you can get a Funko Pop figurine of the 17th most popular character in Walking Dead, and that's all that really matters. If the late Mark Fisher was still alive writing about "hauntology" and the nostalgia vortex that is film in 2019, I suspect Edgar Wright would get a whole chapter.

I know I'm just being a cynical asshole, and I'm sorry. I think I just have Hurt Locker level PTSD from guys in Shaun of the Dead T-shirts cornering me by the water cooler to tell me Dark Knight should win an Oscar.

SOTD was my film awakening. I gotta go for it

Both of these make me laugh so much! Tough choice, but I’m going with the one that has less shaky cam.

Perfect comedy, th Cornetto trilogy begins, the Winchester, Ed, the comic brains of Wright, Pegg and Frost, I adore it beyond words. The Hurt Locker, for me one of the most undeserving Oscar winners ever. Shaun marches on!

For a time period as serious as this, It seems important that an excellent comedy is given some love. Let’s go to the Winchester!

What an insane choice to have to make! I'll go Shaun, just because it's the one I'd most like to watch again (and because I want to make sure great comedies are getting their proper due in the tournament).
