Neither SM2 nor Iron Man (the latter got my play-in vote) holds a candle to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

After it knocked Iron Man out (some MCU backlash, I think, it's clearly the better movie), I was fully prepared to vote against Spider-Man 2 out of spite. But I didn't buy into Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon nearly enough for it to get my vote, so I'm going to go ahead and forgive Spider-Man 2. Go, Spidey, go!

This one is a no-brainer. Spider-Man 2 was the best film of it's year, the best ever superhero film and one of the greatest blockbusters of all time. Crouching Tiger is a fairly typical wuxia film outclassed by many others.

Okay, this is the one that kills me. Spider-man 2 is my favorite superhero film, and I thought I’d be able to vote it deep into Filmspotting Madness. So of course its very first matchup is the stone-cold masterpiece of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

The first time I saw Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, I sat too close to the screen and I left the theater with a cramp in my neck. I think my jaw was also on the ground. Spider-Man 2 is a great superhero movie, maybe the best of the decade, but I don't think it breaks out beyond those superhero parameters. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a great martial arts movie that is exquisitely beautiful and just absolutely suffused with pathos and heartache more varied than the kind we encounter in Spider-Man 2. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon all the way.

I'm really hoping Spidey 2 makes it deep in this tournament. Still my favorite superhero films and would have my vote as one of the finest blockbusters I've ever seen. It's rare a movie believes in the goodness of people as much as this one does; every character is observed with an unfailing compassion and empathy. Even Doc Oc...I absolutely love how Spiderman gives him all the chances he possibly can to leave his villainy behind. Add on top of that the iconic train sequence, the touching romance with MJ (an actual character that transcends a mere romantic interest), and Aunt May's touching, powerful speech about the essence of heroism? In my mind, you have a classic. May not be the most complex film in this tournament but it absolutely might have the most heart. Raimi and Maguire are unstoppable.

This is the first to actually get me to pause. However, as great as Spidey 2 as a superhero film, CTHD is a plainly great film that happens to have superheroes in it.

I love both of these movies but Crouching Tiger truly transported me and gets my vote. Henrik Yalding
