You know, Fantastic Mr. Fox is exactly the kind of movie I'd watch to ease the pain of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Day. And I've never actually had the courage to watch Cristian Mungiu's film a second time,. but that is precisely because that pain, the discomfort, the unease, it's resonated with me so much stronger. It's a truly unique experience, even among Mungiu's filmography, or under the umbrella of the Romanian New Wave (which in general is much lighter than this). It has the distinction in my books of being one of the most singularly powerful films of the decade. Meanwhile, no offence to Wes, but every film he's made is as delightful as Fantastic Mr. Fox. The unique nature of its gorgeous stop-animation doesn't change that for me. 4 Months all day.

4 Months was one of four March Madness films in my blindspot. Managed to take them all in this weekend, and both this & New World have made it to my second round. Great film. This will be with me for a while, regardless.

I'm not an animation expert, but to me the sheer grand canyon sized gap in quality/scope/intimate detail between Fantastic Mr. Fox, and literally every other stop-motion film ever made before it, is frankly mind-blowing. It's like seeing a copy of Blood Meridian in the "Western" section of the library sitting next to a Larry McMurtry novel. To say it "took a genre to new heights" is the understatement of the century (or in this case, I suppose, of the decade).

4 Weeks is one of my few blind spots in this tournament, and I trust everything great I've heard about it. But I won't lose any sleep voting for Mr. Fox at all.

Because you guys posted the short list super-early, I was able to catch up with 4 Days and boy am I glad. It’s now in my top ten for the decade. Looking forward to getting the 2010’s list soon. I’m sure there’s already a draft!
