  • I think one of the reasons I still like Momento so much is that I've found Christopher "Why So Serious" Nolan's subsequent output much more, well... serious... but in a way that takes the fun out of it much of the time. Maybe it's just a Batman overdose over the last decade, but I find myself returning to Nolan's second film (not first as Adam claimed last episode) if I want a sample of his storytelling.

Memento is an expertly crafted jigsaw puzzle that clicks into place perfectly at the film’s climax. Suddenly, it all makes sense. Cache is an equally well crafted jigsaw puzzle. Except the film’s ending does not bring clarity and finality. Instead we are left to try and piece together the messy consequences of imperialist legacies. While we can pack up Nolan’s puzzle and leave it back on the shelf, Hanneke’s lurks in our mind indefinitely. A continual reminder that the prosperity and privilege enjoyed by modern Europeans cannot be seperated from the violent colonialism that fuelled this modern inequality.

This is one I really hope filmspotting listeners don't get wrong. While Momento is a good movie, it doesn't really transcend an inventive plot. Cache, on the other hand, is one of the most affecting films I've seen in my life. If you like last year's Hereditary and haven't seen Cache, I'd implore you to seek it out.

I think Memento is the kind of film people have “I remember where I was when I first saw this” stories about. Ironic, innit?
