I’ve never understood what people like about the Prestige other than the twist. To me the move was just one good magic trick that took >2 hours of setup.

oh wow. this was a hard one. i think i voted for the prestige, but i'm not sure. by far the hardest one to vote for.

I've seen The Prestige three times and still remember nothing about it besides (1) the twist and (2) David Bowie. Hot Fuzz is visually inventive, with whip-smart writing and an incredible joke every 10-20 seconds. Comedies -- like animation -- consistently get short-shrift in these kinds of competitions, and if both this AND Shaun get knocked out for more Very Important Films, I am over it.

This match-up makes me violently upset. Hot Fuzz will always have a special place in my heart and was my introduction to Edgar Wright, but The Prestige, caused me to lie down and think about it and Christian Bale for hours after watching it. I tried flipping a coin, but then, after fate told me to vote for the Prestige, I thought: screw you fate!!!! And that's why I voted for Fuzz.

The Prestige may be the best Christopher Nolan movie, but only after multiple viewings. I think the genius of this movie is easily missed on a first watch, which is probably why it has almost hidden gem status among Nolan's filmography. Hot Fuzz, on the other hand, was great on the first watch through, and the second, and the dozenth. Possibly the most difficult poll for me, but that's my rational.

The Prestige is Nolan's best film, but conplex plot machinations don't make for a cinematic experience that sticks with you. Hot Fuzz was my introduction to Edgar Wright's singularly kintetic style, and his highly visual style of comedy paired with witty dialogue and great performances make it the clear victor

So painful. My favorite film, ever, against my favorite comedy. I think the matchup is interesting because both films have something to say about cinema, filmmaking, and how we absorb storytelling. Hot Fuzz is a brilliant send-up and love-letter to the action genre, blending humor and sentimentality to deconstruct and elevate the cliches of a familiar genre.

But The Prestige is my pick here because it goes more in-depth with its dissection. Is the artist - via what they choose to show you - responsible for what we take out of a storytelling experience? Or are we, the audience, doomed to our reactions from the beginning, because we see what we want to see? After all, as Michael Caine's character says, we want to be fooled. Toss in an affecting theme on the price of obsession and competition, and you get an excellent film that asks essential questions about itself, its creators and the audience.

Also, David Bowie as Nikola Tesla. C'mon. Sorry, Sergeant Angel. It's Borden and Angier for me.

Even though I'm not really a Hot Fuzz fan (how could it live up to Shaun), I'm even less of a fan of the Prestige.

Hot Fuzz is a good comedy. I had a mini-marathon of all Three Flavours Cornetto films one summer in between undergrad years and enjoyed them all. But, I don't remember much about any of them. They were fun action-comedies that didn't make a lasting impact on me. The first time I saw The Prestige, I was gobsmacked. The twist is so utterly satisfying that it has enriched the couple rewatches I've had (it's especially satisfying to know what's happeneing when watching with friends who haven't seen it before. I look at them like a mom on Christmas morning while everything unfolds). On top of the famous twist, it features great performances from Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, and even David Bowie, and meaningfully ponders masculinity and ambition. I really like Edgar Wright's films, but I'm a sucker for Nolan. The choice is easy for me: The Prestige all the way.

I would rather this tournament featured some Soderbergh, so it kind of pains me to vote for Hot Fuzz here, but I absolutely loathed The Prestige and I am happy to vote against it (and know that I will probably be outvoted, but hey THAT'S THE MADNESS). The Prestige is all of the things that I dislike about most of Nolan's work: he does not trust the audience enough to not overexplain both his plots and his characters' actions. On top of that, his sympathies lie entirely with Christian Bale's character, but he's the only one whose choices actually threaten the life of his opponent. Nolan makes a lot of great choices in The Dark Knight and we should all be talking about that film toward the end of the tournament, but I am more than happy to celebrate Edgar Wright's silly and sincere love letter to overwrought cop melodramas (shout out to Olivia Colman!) over this particular Nolan film.

For my taste, Edgar Wright is one of the more overrated filmmakers out there. Hot Fuzz is right up there for movies I'm supposed to like but don't. The Prestige, however, is one of the more underrated films of the decade and is Nolan at his absolute best. I hope it contends for the final.

I’d love for both this and Shaun of the Dead to get through. However I think fans probably don’t vote for 2 Edgar Wright films, especially when this is widely viewed as inferior to Shaun.
