  • History of Violence feels like Cronenberg finally clicking into a new gear that he'd been grinding to find since 1993's M Butterfly... and though he's faltered a little since re-teaming with Viggo for Eastern Promises, this remains a great achievement in his filmography. Basterds is a Tarantino film that features Eli Roth in an acting role. So there's that, I guess.

This was the most difficult match up for me. Both of these movies are deeply important to me and I love them. I had to flip a coin. Was anyone else as torn as I was?

Am I alone in being a bit bewildered on why History of Violence is here instead of the OTHER surprisingly great Viggo/Cronenberg collab from the 2000's? Eastern Promises is one of the most underrated films of the 2000's in my estimation. I suspect I'd still go with Inglorious Basterds either way, I'm just throwing it out there.

There's a lot to love about A History of Violence, but Inglorious Basterds's highs are just so good that I'm willing to overlook its overall unevenness,

All due respect to A History of Violence (yeah, y'all know what's coming), it's Inglorious Basterds and it's not even close. I'm with Mike, Christoph Waltz is enough all on his own to get this film through this round and the next. As a German Studies student (in a past life), Tarantino's first scene is probably the most diabolical subtitle-based bait and switch I've ever seen and it put me on the edge of my seat for the rest of the movie.

I have stopped channel flipping while IG was playing at least a dozen times. Regardless at what point in the movie I’ve entered, I can never leave. Basterds by a mile!!

Ok so I know Basterds is not perfect, but every time I watch this and Brad Pitt starts talking Italian or whatever, it gets me. I laugh my ass off every time. I know Waltz is considered the MVP of this one (rightly so), but I seriously love Pitt in it and I don't think he gets enough credit for how hilarious his broad performance is. Bawnjorno!

QT always does well in the Madness and this is his film geekiest effort. Christophe Waltz alone deserves the win here.
