It's truly tragic Yi-Yi got matched up with the popular juggernaut that is a Pixar film. Yi-Yi is a staggering, novelistic work of humanism from Taiwan's greatest director and it's the better film by far. Its the better depiction of the family unit, and it's a film I come back to again and again because I love the characters so much and how Yang brilliantly dramatizes this ordinary family. Pixar has 3 other movies in this tournament. The Incredibles doesn't need to win this.

Boy it’s a good thing people only vote when they’ve seen both movies, or Yi Yi probably wouldn’t make it to the next round. Of course since everyone voting has seen Yi Yi, it’s going to make it to the final four.

In a perfect world Yi-Yi would easily makes its way to the final four of this tournament.

It’s really heart wrenching to see that maybe the best movie in this tournament, Yi-Yi, is going to lose in the first round. Almost as heart wrenching as watching Yi-Yi.

Uuuuuuuuuuuugh. I knew YI YI would get bounced in early because lots of folks would not find time to see it, but this particular matchup is tantalizing because in a just world, this would be a lot closer than it's going to end up. Pixar has to be in the conversation for best film of the 2000s, it just has to be, but YI YI is such a beautifully patient and gloriously detailed portrait of humanity that I'm gonna vote for it here over Incredibles, I loved it so much. YI YI is a movie I never would have found time for if it weren't for it's inclusion on the shortlist It's time in the contest will be brief, but I treasure every minute of the 3 hours I spent watching it.

Yi Yi has no chance here, but I hope people give it a shot. It's a challenging but rewarding film. Don't let the runtime scare you and break it up into two or three parts if that works better for you. Then check out Taipei Story, A Brighter Summer Day, and Terrorizers which are all masterpieces in their own right. They can be hard to track down, but at least Terrorizers is on Amazon Prime.

It’s no Incredibles 2, but I’m happy to go with Brad Bird here.
