Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favourite movies of all time. Finding Nemo, while certainly a staple of the early 2000's, doesn't hold a candle to it. Because that candle would go out. Because it's underwater. Get it? I'm only making jokes because thinking too much about Sunshine breaks my heart ever so slightly...

Having broken my own heart by rewatching Brokeback Mountain but voting against it, yesterday, my 50th Birthday, I rewatched Nemo with my daughters. This was the first film they connected with as toddlers (they’re now 16&13) and watched on rotation.

So we rewatched it yesterday and it’s still a gem, IMHO Pixar’s masterpiece. Every joke is still fantastic, and the vocal performances are superb.

But I know it’s going down, and again my heart will break. But for me Eternal Subshine is a finalist.

Well, I fear this mantra won't help Dory very much this time. I love Nemo and this really hurts, but Eternal Sunshine has to advance. It's a perfect blend between romance and Sci-Fi and in my opinion one of the best movies of all time.

Finding Nemo was the first movie that I ever saw in the theatres and will always be my go-to whenever I need some cheering up. However, as much as this hurts me and my four-year-old self, I have to vote for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I am sorry to say that I am flushing Nemo, but I have to do it to save Clem and Joel from being erased for good.

Seeing Finding Nemo in the theaters was magical, everything a movie should be. It holds up today and is rewatched, over and over, by my kids. But, Eternal Sunshine is a film that not only changed cinema, but also the way I view life. Even on my 20th watch I walk away heartbroken and full of hope.

"Eternal sunshine .." is a movie that keeps nobody indifferent , magnificently written, filmed and performed . And the ideas behind the script are deep and made me think everytime I see it, is a unique movie . While Nemo is sweet , nostalgic of our childhood ( who has not been lost at least once waiting for her parents to rescue her/him) but is a story already seen before many times . I definitely go for "Eternal" .

Charlie Kaufman is easily one of the most inventive writer we have in the bizz, and most definitely one of the best of the 2000s. And with "Synecdoche, New York" and "Adaptation" already out of the game, I had to vote for "Eternal Sunshine" just to keep his name out there.

Please don't ever tell my daughter that I voted against "Finding Nemo." If she finds out, I will probably need to have her memory of that fact erased.

Quick question: When a movie is knocked out of Madness, is it also erased from out memories? Or do we simply forget it existed after five seconds?

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I've rewatched Eternal Sunshine more times than Finding Nemo - and I discover something new with each revisit. I am a self-described Pixar fantastic, which is actually what makes this choice so EASY. Eternal Sunshine gets my vote because there's nothing else like it. Nemo is superb, but it's not Pixar's masterpiece (UP and WALLE are superior) If I never got to show a friend "Finding Nemo" again, I'd be alright. But recommending "Sunshine" is one of my movie-nerd delights.

Just don't put Eternal Sunshine up against Before Sunset. I might have to miss my plane.

Eternal Sunshine is a singular film. It is a clever premise, tightly written and features some brilliant performances. But what sets it apart completely is its blend of form and content. Eternal Sunshine uses filmmaking techniques to tell its story. Madness is full of great films, but I don't think there's another one whose imagery so fully expresses its themes. The colour palette and compositions are incredible.

I don't know any other work by Michel Gondry… his IMDB page seems to indicate he's a bit of a one hit wonder. But what a wonder!

It will be painful to see 63 films from this bracket fade into non-existence. If the stakes of Filmspotting Madness are to be taken to their fullest extreme, it's not enough for them to simply be deep-sixed. The true horror would be to lose these films completely: to forget that we ever saw them, and keep none of what they gave us.

If only there were a film that could fully express how painful that would be...

Nemo is sweet and pretty good, but I prefer ESOTSM. Maybe I was worn out on Nemo what with all the times my nephew watched it, but I also consider Eternal Sunshine a unique premise beautifully carried by director, writer, and cast.

What a brutal challenge. These films are nothing alike and both amazing in their own right. I suspect my choice would be different if I had a family, but Joel and Clem‘s messy attempts to find themselves and each other sticks more in my mind and I never found anything in Finding Nemo to match the mark left on my memory as Clem vanishing into Joel‘s unconscious depths whispering, „Meet me in Montauk.“

A blindspot until recently for me, Eternal Sunshine lived up to the hype and even exceded my expectations. BUT I don't think I have obsessively rewatched any movie more than Finding Nemo. Like Adam, no matter how many times it plays in the background, or how many times I've heard the same joke it still holds its charm. At least one Pixar needs to just keep swimming further in this bracket.

It has to be Nemo. A "one and done" film should not even be on the list. Nemo is also a better film by far. If we use the criteria of the losing film goes into the fire, never to be seen again - I'm okay with that being Sunshine.

  • Mark Dunn - 5 years ago

My inner child and cynical adult are fighting this one out. I think the achingly sad beauty of Eternal Sunshine just edges it out.

How far will love go? Will it go across the oceans and across memories? Well, apparently it can only be one...you monsters. #longlivethesea

  • Andrew Sweatman - 5 years ago

Maybe instead of incinerating all copies of Finding Nemo after it inevitably loses this round, we can all just elect to have it erased from our memories. Perhaps we'll come across it again? Meet me in Montauk, Nemo.
