I'm sure Shaun and Ed can easily kill Bob and Charlotte "by removing the head or destroying the brain".

No, seriously, I love both movies very much. But Shaun of the Dead is one of my top 5 movies of all time, Lost in Translation has to go.

The toughest choice in this round; while Shaun of the Dead is a ridiculously funny and then improbably touching comedy/horror/family drama/romance mash up, Lost in Translation is just a poem of a film that floats along on the edges of love, sorrow, confusion, that has us quietly sobbing, unheard, on a phone call home thousands of miles away, or giddily performing Pretenders and Roxy Music at karaoke in a neon lit wonderland. Lost is it.

C'mon Filmspotting nation! Let's get Lost In Translation into the pantheon. I love Shaun of the Dead, but Lost in Translation is a film that sticks with me, Such a perfect film about loneliness and isolation, even within relationships.

The easiest match-up of all. Lost in Translation is a mean-spirited and blithely ignorant slap in the face that doubles down on its reductive takes on Japan again and again until the argument that it's not racist becomes nigh on impossible to make. Shaun of the Dead, on the other hand, is a delight and a breath of fresh air that brought energy and fun to a flabby old genre.

This match up feels like my fridge. Lost in Translation is the Blood Orange Marmalade I was gifted for Xmas a few years ago, it sits in the back of the fridge and I think about it every so often but won't generally reach for it and it might be a bit past its time by now. Shaun Of the Dead is the generic Strawberry Jam at the front, you know what it tastes like, you like what it tastes like and when you need a snack late at night you know you are reaching for it. Shaun Of The Dead needs to be there for me late at night and as an old reliable, even if there is a chance I will get a bit of red on me.

You evil, evil, evil men. This is a veritable Sofia's choice. I love both of these films, but I just seem to make a decision. On the one hand, Lost in Translation grapples with the idea of existing in a city where you just want to hide to forget your problems. SOTD is about realizing that hiding in the pub isn't going to work to solve your problems. Ultimately, I went with SOTD, because frankly, if only one can remain, I want it as a future training guide for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

I don't think I ever got on Lost in Translation's emotional wavelength. I can understand why people like it, but I'm afraid I just never got there. Shaun of the Dead, on the other hand, holds a special place in my heart, as my dad took me to see a special screening that featured Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost when I was almost certainly way too young to see it. And on a school night! Easy choice for me.

As much as Shaun of the Dead provides endless laughs and rewatchability, it’s impossible for me to imagine losing Coppola’s masterpiece forever. Revisiting Lost in Translation, the beautiful love story and gorgeous Tokyo cinematography that come with it, is one of my favorite rewatches from the decade.

Shaun of the Dead - A vote from the heart and not from the head.

Like/love both, but I really haven't felt like going back to Lost in Translation in years. Shaun of the Dead I watch, at least parts of it, whenever it's on. Hilarious.

  • Erin Teachman (Washington, DC) - 5 years ago

This would be harder for me if the Coppola we were voting on for this decade was the tragically under-appreciated Marie Antoinette. Shaun of the Dead's visceral comedic reinvention of the zombie genre definitely outruns the languid Lost in Translation in the metaphorical zombie apocalypse of Filmspotting Madness.

Wasn’t even a stressor. Put these two up against one another and you’ll find me at the pub drinking a pint with Shaun and Friends.

  • Adam Grossman, Vancouver, B.C. - 5 years ago

Oh boy, yeah, this is the one that stands out as - if not the toughest match-up for me - at least the one I feel sad about... but my heart belongs (and always will do) to 'Lost in Translation'.

  • Lawrence - 5 years ago

Hardest one of this round, hardest of all Madness for me other than Sunset v Adaptation. I have no justification for voting for Lost In Translation over Shaun Of The Dead, these two movies deserve better than this. "I'm sorry Shaun..."

  • Mark Barber - 5 years ago

This one killed me... this was bad.
Shaun has a zombie Bill Nighy! Shaun has better use of a Queen song than anything in Bohemian Rhapsody! Shaun has red on him!
    Bill Murray touched ScarJo's foot??
I'll watch the revivied zombie version of Shaun after you guys kill it off.

    Lost gets my vote...

No chance I can just go to the pub and wait for this whole thing to blow over? No? I must decide?

This is easily the hardest choice yet. Both films have a place in my heart few films do. I stared at the poll, battling with myself for about fifteen minutes. In the end, the idea of losing Shaun of the Dead was too much. You monsters. You monsters.
