Fantastic Mr. Fox charmed me, but the Before trilogy went above and beyond that and blew me away. We can live in a world without Wes Anderson's furry friends. But I refuse to live in a world without Julie Delphy dancing as the sun sets; it's such a perfect film, and among the best sequels of all time.

I appreciate Fantastic Mr. Fox, but this is possibly the easiest choice of the round. Before Sunset all the way! Baby, I don't care if I miss that plane.

"Fantastic Mr. Fox" showed a wonderful new skill in Anderson that I think was perfected later in "Isle of Dogs" but in "Before Sunset", Linklater (with help from Hawke & Delphy) perfected his art of revisiting characters on his first try. A film comprised mostly of walking and talking is more thoughtful, romantic and real than anything else cinema has to offer. Sorry Mr. Fox, but we're gonna have to let Jesse & Celine walk and talk a little bit further.

I'm making a conscious effort in this tournament not to just throw my vote to whichever movie is more superficially "emotionally resonant" or, god forbid, the I-word. Because movies can serve many purposes, they can just be fun. This match-up really tests that premise. Because while Fantastic Mr. Fox may very well be one of the most gorgeous and fun movies ever made (and in my estimation, it is), it's undeniable that so much of Wes Anderson's unique charm comes from a certain dry sensibility that can leave you feeling cold and sterile, but that's kinda the point. His characters are the essence of detached cool......at least, superficially trying to be.

Before Sunset is just fucking all out there, man. Open heart surgery. Human connection on a lit stage.

Ultimately I just think it's a far worse tragedy to lose the middle piece of a trilogy than it is to lose a standalone animated film. You may argue that Before Sunrise is already gone, but like Jesse and Celine I refuse to let it go.

Fox was charming and fun, but Before Sunset is the kind of film that makes you think and ponder on countless things. Loved it.

  • This is the crux of my collegiate cinephilic experience, indundated to peers waxing poetic about their darling Wes Anderson as I toil away in my solitude of Linklater devotion. Many were quick to crown The Grand Budapest Hotel as the championing film of the 2015 Best Picture race while they were quick to look over the best film of the decade in Boyhood. I'm afraid that will repeat itself in only the second round here. That being said, my vote is with Before Sunset.

    Ohhhhhhh!!!

Like a Ouija board planchette, my mouse moves towards Mr. Fox. It's Anderson's best. I've seen it at least 15 times and it just never gets old. I love it, my kids love it, we quote it all the time... I tried voting for both films using the control button.... I simply can't not pick Mr. Fox. It's too Fantastic.

I cannot rationally assess Before Sunset. It was the first movie where I recognized myself in it and in the situation so completely that my soul practically vibrated in emotional harmonics when I accidentally discovered the movie. So that's my mountain sized amount of salt so you can judge me accurately when I say that Sunset is a more intricate emotional movie with a more interesting aesthetic than Fantastic Mr. Fox (I admit the possibility that I am underrating the Fox . . . but not much more than that).

This is the one I predict Josh will feel most torn by and some regret over... especially when he votes incorrectly for 'Fantastic Mr. Fox'.

'Before Sunset' miraculously betters its predecessor – a feat which cannot be understated.
