While Nolan at his best is much more interesting than Fincher at his best, Zodiac is a far, FAR better movie than The Prestige. The types of people who deem The Prestige a masterpiece because of its foreshadowing and twists are the exact type who would miss the brilliance of Zodiac, which embodies and deconstructs obsession as a theme by leaving the audience "detectives" in the cold. That final scene is far more evocative than any amount of fancy plot mechanics could ever be.

The world is a cruel place. Every March, Josh and Adam (and Sam) subject a particular sub-set of nerds to agonize over films for no apparent reason.
But what's more cruel is that The Prestige may never be fully realized for the amazing achievement it is.
The literal chill inducing cinematic magic of Nolan's morality tale should have this film in serious contention for the top. It really is THAT good.

    This one is easy.

Nolan and Fincher are 2 of our greatest directors, but which of their films stayed with me long after my first (and second) viewing? It's no magic trick., Zodiac should advance.

I hope you were watching carefully, because its far to early for The Prestige to disappear.

I have to give Zodiac another watch, but I doubt a reviewing would change my mind here. Every time I rewatch the Prestige, it gets better and better. Christian Bale's (SPOILER) dual performance is probably a career best, and the trick that Nolan pulls off with The Prestige is as good if not better than the one he pulls with Memento. Why don't more people talk about this movie?

Both are films about obsession, while The Prestiege is simply incredible after first viewing, Zodiac is a slow burn both inside and outside of the film itself. It sticks with you and the more time you give it, the more it consumes you. So many memorable moments but the most memorable perhaps is the feeling of dread that hasn't quite been replicated (Prestiege pun intended) exactly like it since.

A Fincher film that many consider his crowning achievement vs Nolan's best film that most people think is his 5th best or something insane like that. Both are about legacy, both are about obsession - and not just in the way that you could sortof argue that MOST movies are about focussed, obsessed characters. And both movies are haunted and haunting.

I keep trying to figure out why I went with "The Prestige" but I can't, especially because this would basically knock Fincher out of the tourney, while Nolan has 2 other huge movies in the running, both of which will beat out "The Prestige" anyway.

But if I'm walking into that theater and these are my choices, I'm going into "The Prestige." Jackman's best work, Nolan's most overlooked, I have to stand by it.

Toughest choice in this round. My favorite Fincher film up against my favorite Nolan film. Great performances from strong casts in both of them. Came down to a coin flip.

The Prestige = Nolan at his most restrained

Zodiac = Fincher at his LEAST restrained

I like Zodiac but I don't think it deserves to go much further.

Another tough one. Absolutely love The Prestige, but Zodiac, man. That film messed me up.

While Prestige may be filled with many twists and turns, they cannot compare to the endless winding road that is Zodiac. No thriller before or since has been able to hold my undivided attention upon multiple viewings better than Zodiac. Even knowing the destination does nothing to diminish the tight grip Fincher and his performers have on the material. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being positive, I would give my choice a solid 8.

This is a real odd one for. Both films I’ve seen just the once in my teens. Knowing nothing about the Zodiac killer previously, this film left me cold at the time disappointed by the inconclusive ending. However, it’s a film that has stayed with me ever since. Contrast that with the Prestige, a film with a twist that stunned me at the time, but having seen plenty twists since, its a film over time I’ve forgotten existed. Zodiac all the way... but I should really watch it again.

I remember being torn between The Prestige and The Illusionist [w/Edward Norton] the year they were both released, with the edge being given to The Illusionist initially. I think I still appreciate The Illusionist more for its warmth, which makes this pairing interesting. The Prestige and Zodiac are both cold and clinically precise, with the precision in the last film serving to keep the viewer at a safe distance from the horrific circumstances of the Zodiac Killer case, while the precision in The Prestige actually works against it, as the central story could benefit from some warmth.

All of this is a roundabout way of saying that my vote has to go to Zodiac. I still haven't seen all of Fincher's films [Gone Girl remains a blind spot, simply due to lack of time, but my favourite Fincher films are this and The Game, so Zodiac musat live to fight another day.

I have always been left cold by Nolan's tale of battling illusionists and the wildly different evaluation they put on the craft of the performance. However, I have always been absolutely fascinated and gripped by the motley cast of quirky characters David Fincher assembled in his speculative fiction about tracking down a terrifying serial killer. For me, Fincher's ensemble is more cohesive and charismatic than Nolan's (it even made for some quality Massacre Theater). Fincher set his stylish hooks into a real life unsolvable mystery and I just find that so much more compelling than Nolan's film about just how intensely someone should be devoted to the performance of their craft.

All about the ending! Zodiac is opened ended. Prestige is all about the finale! Besides, no one can vote to eliminate a David Bowie performance.
