Is a public vote the best way to determine whether to legalize abortion?

Of course put it to a public vote. Let the people decide in a private vote. Mexico is a predominately Catholic nation with a very strong Catholic Church. We all know that. But both the Church and the government are male-driven. How about a popular vote on the issue to give women a stronger chance to make a decision affecting them and their bodies? Seems reasonable to me. After a strong effort to communicate an understanding of the vote, when to vote and where, if the vote is to maintain the status quo, so be it.

As long as the Catholic church and the growing evangelical Christians have a major control over the decisions of the people of Mexico, a referendum would be a terrible way to determine whether a woman can retain the right to decide on the health of her body and specifically whether or not she chooses to have an abortion. The government should have no voice in that decision in Mexico or anywhere else in North America.

Just want to correct a prior statement from someone saying that NY recently passed a law saying abortion was legal in the 9th month:

Fact check: Trump claims New York allows abortion 'moments before birth'
"There could be no greater contrast to the beautiful image of a mother holding her infant child than the chilling displays our nation saw in recent days," Trump said, speaking out against abortion that occurs later in pregnancy. "Lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother's womb moments before birth."

    This is false.

The state recently passed a law loosening restrictions on abortions in the state, allowing abortions after 24 weeks if the fetus is not viable or when it’s necessary to protect the life of the mother. The president paints the picture of a healthy mother and child, but an abortion would not be legal in that scenario after 24 weeks in New York state.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo has pushed back at critics, noting that it is “just a mirror of the federal law” — the abortion rights enshrined by the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade.

What's more, abortions later in pregnancy are exceedingly rare; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that just 1.3 percent of abortions in the U.S. in 2015 took place in or after the 21st week.

Little Baby--First of all, get your facts straight. Many animal species have been know to kill their young. This from a National Geographic article: "Indeed, mother bears, felines, canids, primates, and many species of rodents—from rats to prairie dogs—have all been seen killing and eating their young. Insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds also have been implicated in killing, and sometimes devouring, the young of their own kind." (See https://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/03/140328-sloth-bear-zoo-infanticide-chimps-bonobos-animals/). Second, even if a woman uses birth control, none of them are 100% effective and women can still get pregnant. (See https://www.optionsforsexualhealth.org/facts/birth-control/chart/). If a woman gets pregnant even though she used birth control, it should be her choice whether to have the baby. Yes, heartbeat starts at about four weeks. However, the first electrical impulses of the brain occur at week six, and, at that point, those impulses do not have the organized activity seen in a shrimp. Even at week thirteen, when various parts of the brain have formed, the fetus is not sentient. Why? Because synapses have not formed. Synapses connect neurons, which allow communication between two nerves. Until they are formed, the fetus is completely unable to respond to anything or be aware of anything. it is basically the equivalent of a sea slug in its development. Synaptic development really starts in week 28. So abortions prior to that time are the removal of a sea slug. What about birth defects detected in the womb. Should a woman be saddled with a seriously handicapped baby? That should be her choice. Finally, as Sonja points out, what about pregnancies from rape? Should a woman be forced to have that baby and be reminded of that horrible event every day? Again, that should be the woman's choice. So, stop with the base emotional appeals and base your decisions on facts.

Not one comment has mentioned "rape".... should a woman that has been raped have to raise this child alone, shamed and without help? What happens when "unwanted" children become adults? What happens to this child if there is a birth defect? There is more to the issue of innocent unborn babies..... these unwanted children grow up unloved, uncared for, many never getting the normal basic needs a child has to have to thrive. Educate yourself.... see what happens to unwanted children.... it is less cruel to terminate an early unwanted pregnancy then to raise a child you can not love or care for. If a man could get pregnant abortion would be legal... no doubt about it.

I believe abortion should be legal and without restriction for the first 4 months of the pregnancy. After that, only under special circumstances. I believe that the new NY State law legalizing abortion up until minutes before delivery in the 9th months is an abomination and equivalent to infanticide.

If men could get pregnant- abortion would be a
    Sacrament!

It's up to the parents and tie goes to the mother.

Little Baby. Take your southern baptist right wing ways back up north. It should be the mother’s choice. Get some education. Many animals kill their babies, once born, for many different reasons.

I agree with Maria. It's nobody's business other than the women's what she has in her body. I'm not saying what is right or wrong, I'm simply saying it is up to the woman to decide.

Outlaw male masturbation. Shooting your load into a napkin or the toilet bowl is a wilfully antilife act.

Stop killing children! All you science deniers should realize that baby’s hearts are beating very early on and if you are too stupid to use regular and cheap birth control or abstinence, you should not be able to use murder of innocent babies as birth control... This process is abhorrent and no other animal deliberately kills their own offspring... Disgusting

Make legal Then it should be up by the person /persons who want to used it It’s no one business except for the person that is affecting her / thier lives
