Eamonn approaches rugby the way that he approaches life; with determination to do his best, to be part of a team, and with character. He is an outstanding young man, and I am very proud to know him.

Eamonn Matthews, now this is a young man that will go far. Not only is he a fierce, intelligent rugby player, he is also one of the most genuine, personable funny young men I have ever met. He’s got my vote.

  • Bud Fackrell - 6 years ago

Tanner Pope is an amazing Rugby player and an even better person. He’s an Eagle Scout, active in community service and will graduate with a Business degree in May. Not common for a Prop to receive this recognition. He does the dirty work inside and moves a ruck both directions. He also picks up the rock and scores. He simply changed the course of a game. Amazing athlete and amazing young man. Give him your support!!!!

  • Billy Kelly - 6 years ago

“Chris” you’re right, Eamonn does have a lot of friends and people who have played and coached against him that nominated him and recognized him as MVP of the Rugby East Conference. He helped bring an unranked program, that competed against 6 of the top20 teams in the country, to #12. Eamonn did not ask to be nominated and he takes pride in just being in the same class as the other incredibly talented nominees. Proud to put my name on this “Chris” and so you know, St. Bonaventure University is the oldest Franciscan University in the country whose alumni include CEOs of some of the biggest companies in the world, surgeons, entrepreneurs, professional rugby players ...and really good people with backbones that who put their names to things. You may like feeling like an important troll. If you knew anything about Eamonn and the people who represent his program, they just think it’s important to be nice. Rugby is a gentleman's game, you may want to consider another sport.

  • Chris - 6 years ago

Eamonn must have a lot of friends cause I never herd of st. Bonaventure. Oh ya cause there not ranked in the top #2

The truth about Eamonn Matthews is that he'd be the first one to root for the others. That's his character. That's who he is. Heart, integrity, spirit and drive. You deserve this buddy...

All these people from Hudson Catholic voting for Eamonn Matthews after Terrace Matthews abuses VP of Hudson Catholic power to gain votes for his son. Amazing

  • CJ - 6 years ago

  • Terry Matthews - 6 years ago

Rooting for you, Eamonn Matthews. From HSAA to USA U20s to MVP of the entire Rugby East Conference from the #9 position, no less, you have made yourself and your teammates better every step of the way. As a 2+ yr captain, you’ve helped lead St Bonaventure University from unranked to #12 in the country. You’re a leader on and off the pitch and a Dean’s List student, too. You’re in great company on this list and you have earned the right to be there.

A true leader leads by example. Eamonn Matthews is that leader on and off the field. Being the Captain of a 70+ man team is no easy job, different personalities, different playing styles and different values. Eamonn has worked with the coaches and his teammates to pull it all together to produce a nationally ranked team.
A strong player and a even stronger leader!

  • Maryann Barattia - 6 years ago

Remarkable ethics.in an age of narcissistic athletes to leave his team better than he found it. Congrats, Aemonn , Mom & Dad Matthews!

  • Danny Wood - 6 years ago

Tanner Pope will represent the way it should be.

  • Chet Nuts - 6 years ago

Hey everyone, Chet Nuts here again. I’m writing to say that Sir Spencer Craig is without a doubt the primest of candidates. He can down a brewski and clear a ruck with such grace it’ll make your grandma cry. Elegant violence and aggressive beauty from this gent.

  • Jordan Fackrell - 6 years ago

All these players are fantastic. But, as an avid Rugby watcher, the clear cut choice in my humble opinion is Tanner Pope. The tenacity he plays with and his ability to change the trajectory of a game I feel is what separates him from the back. Jump on the bandwagon everyone!!!!

  • Courtney Halliday-Oro - 6 years ago

Eamonn Matthews is the best Role Model on the list. I had Eamonn as a student when I was starting my career as a Drama teacher at a large urban Elementary school in Jersey City, NJ. He was always the boy who would volunteer and try new parts not worrying about what people thought but being creative with his class. He would support his friends when they went up on stage too and was a wonderful role model too. Eamonn has a gift for leading others and a compassionate heart to go along with it. I hope Eamonn rises to the top like I know he should.
    Go Eamonn Matthews!
    Your Drama teacher,
    Courtney

Good luck Nic, you are the best

  • Rugby Lifer - 6 years ago

Tanner Pope is it. No question. He plays one of the toughest positions in the SEC of college rugby. Tough. Strong enough to control a scrum, but nimble/quick enough to be a scoring threat every time he touches the ball. Ask Mid-South front-rowers whom they LEAST want to face in a pivotal scrum and they will choose this man. He regularly wreaks havoc on both sides of the ball. If ever a prop deserved such an accolade, it is now.

  • Chet Nuts - 6 years ago

    Spencer Craig vs the world

  • Dawson Pope - 6 years ago

Tanner Pope will skunk all these kids in rugby and Apex. Good luck fellas....

  • Shirin Djavanmardi - 6 years ago

Good luck Nic Jan. You are the best????????????????????

  • Jacqueline Matthews - 6 years ago

The names on this list are the best of the best. Each of them has the rugby resume that lists All American and all the other accolades that are deserving.

What separates Eamonn Matthews is where the Program WAS and where the program IS NOW. He captained a team that began the season unranked and ended the season ranked #12 in the country. He is a Deans List student and bleeds BONA blood. The best legacy is that he will eventually leave the program and it will just keep getting better and THAT is what the goal always was. #WelcomeToStBonaventure

St Bonaventure has benefited and grown exponentially because of the leadership of Eamonn Matthews.

From Western NY to the boroughs of NYC and NJ, he has brought awareness of the sport, is a champion for the game itself and has represented the USA in international competition. Eamonn is truly deserving of this award.

    Congrats Eamonn!
