Students should absolutely be sent home to avoid further spread of the lice to other children and faculty. I had lice a few times while in public school. I was never out of class more then a day or two for treatment and removal.

lice do not carry diseases. They can't survive in bedding so there is no need to launder every single item of clothing or bedding. change rhe pillow cases and comb the kids hair out every day for about two weeks with special fine-tooth metal comb and have the kids avoid head to head contact. don't penalize a kid by forcing him out of school for two weeks and don't injure them by pouring industrial strength pesticides on their tender scalps.
And stop making kids feel bad about getting harmless but irritating bugs.Lice don't discriminate. Anyone can get these bugs

Head lice are not known to transmit any disease. If the student is uncomfortable at school, send them home. Otherwise, let them stay. The symptoms of head lice are often less annoying than those of a common cold.

Live is horrible to deal with.
Lady at the school says ohh treat her hair and (child will be back the next day) that is the problem!
I had to take days.. off work to do laundry treat all family members bag up toys vacuume furniture comb out long hair it took day.
Send them home and after a week have the school nurse check them back for clearance.
if school even have nurses any more because of budget cuts.
