Every time I watch No Country, I find something new to love. It gave us the best villain since Dr. Lecter, the best exchange of dialogue this side of De Niro and Pacino in "Heat" and the most beautiful cinemagraphtography in the Coen's body of work. Nearly every scene has been my favorite of the film at one point or another. The movie's brilliance lies in its specificity and attention to detail. Growing up in a small town (800 people), I know people that talk exactly as Sheriff Bell does in the opening scene, referencing the younger of the two Jim Scarboroughs, as if everyone already knows who that is. I'll keep coming back to NCFOM again and again, for the reasons stated above and so many more. It's a real shame it was relegated to third place. In a tournament full of impossible choices, this was always the easy one for me.
I never really expected to value Fellowship as highly as I did - but every time it came up for a vote, my nostalgia overrode any other, possibly finer inclination I might have had.

No Country and Fellowship not being in the top two is ridiculous when the unfathomably overrated TWBB is. I am a dedicated Coens disciple and NC is glorious, but Fellowship (although my second best of the trilogy) of all those in the Madness is so clearly the finest, pinnacle of direction, creation, adaptation, soundtrack, world building, and will destroy the rules of Madness by still existing.

You need to call it. I can’t call it for you. It wouldn’t be fair. It wouldn’t even be right. Except that no one needs a coin for this choice. NCFOM is second only to PTA’s masterpiece, TWBB... robbed in the last round but not again, right?!

Once again, I have to vote for the complete film over the inspired first act.

The silver-lining of the insipid Fellowship of the Rings making it to the Final Four is that it gets a long overdue kick in the teeth not once, but twice in a row.

I was sad to see "The Fellowship of the Ring" lose, even though I voted for PTA's film in the final four. And not only did it lose, but it got what I would considered trounced for this late in the tournament when the choices should be tougher and closer. That can't happen again. Not when you have one of the best fantasy films of all time against an above average thriller.

So 3rd place does not go away forever in this exercise? If we have a 3rd place winner it must!
No Country for Old Men lives on! As it should.

In the long run, sometimes 3rd is better. When you're #1, heavy lies the crown. As a Best-Picture Oscar Winning Filmspotting Champion, NCFOM has had to endure years of resentment and accusations of being "Overrated."
For 12 years some have resented that THERE WILL BE BLOOD hasn't been on top. It may finally have its year. Let it be on top. So it can experience being resented & eventually dethroned.
Going from 1st to 3rd place may in the long run spare NO COUNTRY from the burden of the crown, and allow it to experience its "secret success" in peace.
