Given recent shootings in B.C., should we reconsider our gun laws?

Criminals don’t abide by the law and so changing the law only affects abiding citizens. When someone illegally obtains a firearm or uses it for acts of violence they should face stiff sentences rather than making pointless changes to the law that just restrict the access and use of the good guys

I wonder how many here are actually Canadian. Reading all the comments this looks like an NRA page. Here is the reality, most Canadians aren't interested in concealed carry or US style gun laws coming northward. A leger poll which gave the Tories a 13 point lead nationally showed over 80% support C-71 including over 2/3 of Conservative voters. So the gun lobby may think rehashing the NRA talking points will work like it has in the US forgetting we have a different culture with different values and unlike the US where many have an irrational hatred of government we don't. We may not like the government of the day, but we don't think government in itself is bad. Likewise we balance individual rights with common good and while sometimes we go too far in one direction we generally understand the most successful societies balance the two and those that lean too heavily to one side have problems.

Well I voted 'no' because I'm sure the tyrants would interpret a 'yes' answer as agreement to punish the lawful gun owners... again and again. But yes I do want to the gun laws to change. There is no need for Canadians to be disarmed sitting ducks when criminals go on a rampage. Canadians need to be trained and they need to carry to end the threat immediately, not have to wait around for police to show up (and die).

This is a very poorly worded question with a bias towards more gun control. You should also have an option to reduce the ridiculous amount of regulations and coercion that are foisted upon the gun owner. It is a basic human right to own firearms. If you don't agree with that you need to open a history book.

    We need concealed carry permits

i believe concealed should be made a legal right
so we can defend ourselve's not only against criminals but wildlife as well , i live in northern Saskatchewan where their is a lot of wildlife that can be dangerous when hiking or camping in the woods also i believe people that abuse that right should face harsh punishment.

My comment is from The March/April edition of the National Firearms Publication. It states "When Professor Mauser, a renowned gun researcher, made a special request to Statistics Canada asking for a comparison of firearms-related crime to crimes where a firearm caused injury, he found that in 2013 there were 5,027 firearms-related incidents out of 263,054 violent crimes(two percent of violent crimes). However, a gun only caused injury in 1,194 of these crimes.(0.5 percent of violent crimes). Accordingly, all analysis of firearms-related crime in Canada could be using a statistic that quadruples the real number of these crimes. What is the true number? Nobody knows.
The Liberals assume that gun ownership(a centuries-old Canadian tradition) is a problem in and of itself. They assume, despite all evidence, that their immense, bureaucratic paperwork system of licensing and registration will, in some marvelous science-fiction manner, give them godlike control over all firearms. As a result, the police are warned about the guns and people least likely to harm them and dangerously blindsided about the people and guns most likely to threaten their lives.

I believe gun laws should have restrictions on heavy artillery like rocker launchers and grenades, but no other restrictions on other weapons, and if you qualify for your license there should be routine anual mental health chwckups to determine eligibility

I was not disappointed reading these comments. I agree concealed carry should be legal. Murder is still illegal so, no, the firearms community does not need more restrictions.

Yes they need to change they need to be greatly impoved in every aspect by someone in the firearm community who knows anything about guns besides "gun bad".

I have been involved with firearms and the rules and regulations concerning them since the mid 70’s. The Liberal agenda has always been to deny legally entitled citizens the ability to own firearms....PERIOD. The initial development of the F.A.C was designed to bring a significant cost to firearm ownership in hopes of pricing them out of existence. Subsequent Liberal laws have targeted various makes and models of legitimately owned firearms through demonic testimony, denied individuals specific transport requirements through unsupported rhetoric. The Liberals have not targeted criminals in any way shape or form, in fact they reduced sentencing on convicted criminals in legislation about to be passed. Legitimate firearm owners are not the problem and have never been the problem.

If they do change the laws, they should change it to allow concealed carry and give non criminals a better chance at protecting themselves, others and their property.

Don't forget to pull this poll down and whine that it's been "corrupted" when you don't get the results that you want....I have faith in you!!

If gun laws are to be changed, it should be to allow concealed carry for self protection. Laws allowing for concealed carry already exist in Canada but through bureaucratic interference is always denied to virtually all applicants. If I have a right to life (which I do) then I also have a right to the best tool for that purpose.

Murdering people is illegal, has been for a very long time, and yet people still get murdered . If a law was going to stop killing, that one should have done it.

  • Ethan - 5 years ago

Should probably do something about the criminals breaking the laws rather than the inanimate objects.

  • MARK - 5 years ago

The only thing that should be reconsidered is how restrictive they are already! Criminals don't care about the laws!

  • Johnny - 5 years ago

Criminals don't follow the law. Here's a novel idea... lets actually hold our judges to account when they let all these losers out on bail who continually commit crimes. Our firearms laws are very strict. Lets start by enforcing them.

  • Dan Leroux - 5 years ago

Criminals aren't using legal guns anyway.

  • Ryan - 5 years ago

Why would we change them ? They only apply to legal firearms owners anyways and anyone commiting a crime will not worry if they possess a firearm legally . The real issue is the illegal firearms smuggled in and the gangs that illegally possess said firearms .

  • Carl - 5 years ago

How about focus on the real issue? Gangs...

  • Keith Savage - 5 years ago

Yeah change them to be less crazy and restrictive! Canada (including BC) has brutally obscure and restrictive laws that need to be abolished as it is. Get outta here with this garbage
