The Magic Mouse 2 was not drastically re engineered by Apple. The replaced the battery compartment with a rechargeable and added a lightning port on the bottom which engineering wise was the simplest way. I use one for short periods with my Mac mini but honestly if I had to use one for more detailed and lengthly work I would buy something else. This mouse was clearly designed with form over function or any thought of ergonomics.

I keep a Logitech wired mouse on the side for when my "magic" mouse goes dead. The "magic" mouse is just one more example of "looking good' beating out usability.

As mentioned above, AA batteries instead making what becomes a disposable product. My AA apple mouse that has been operating for god knows how long. I guess its disposability is part of the plan...

Magic Mouse as the magic keyboard are defective products due to bad Bluetooth design on iMac. They simply do not work.

The Apple mouse has a serious problem, but the port location is not it.
Plug it in while you make a coffee and it’ll run for hours.

The real problem is that the fixed battery means these devices are entirely disposable, unlike their AA powered predecessors.

I agree with above, warn the user at something like 15% left, not a couple of minutes before it dies. Raising it a bit and putting a lightning port at the front is perfectly fine so the mouse can be used while plugged in.

Also, I'd not be mad if they just gave us an option to have the very same mouse but wired. I currently use a wired keyboard and would be fine with a wired mouse as well on my iMac. The last time they had a wired mouse was the mighty mouse and that was a long time ago.

Warn the user sooner when the battery is low, as opposed to when there is only 2% left.

People that complain about the location don't actually use one. when I get a low power alert ill charge it for half an hour over lunch and its full for the next month.

    its not an issue.

Make it a three button mouse. It’s useless for professional 3D software without three buttons. I don’t care how you have to charge it.
